    Default Tailstock Design Question

    Hi all,

I have been looking at adjustable tailstocks to accompany my RT and also for use on the t&c grinder. I'm thinking of making one, or two since they look pretty simple. One thing that intrigues me is they all seem to have the point on the dead centre off centre. As in the point has been ground eccentric to the shaft. Why is this? At first I thought it may be a way of fine adjusting the height but since many of these things run a groove with a knurled nut to push them in and out, turning the shaft for fine adjustment would disengage the groove from the rear in/out adjustment.

Any ideas on why it's like this? There must be an obvious reason.

My Vertex HV6 tailstock is not as you describe. But I did notice that some others are. Why? Probably to minimize interference with a tool from the top? Maybe to save some material in the castings? Maybe the barrel has two slots, so it can be inserted two ways to provide a two way fixed height adjustment?

So you can machine closer to the CL without milling away part of the TS.... PDW

    Hi Simon,

When you design the tailstock for the 3A, have a look to see how close you can position the table to the grinding wheel with the wheel both parallel and at right angles to the table. You might find you run out of room and that's why Hercus and a number of other tool and grinder manufacturers offset the tailstock ( and their other accessories ) in the vertical plane. I don't know how much the position of the grafted on Clarkson spindle differs from that of the original spindle on your hybrid.

    Thanks PDW, that makes sense.

Hi Bob, I see what you mean. Cylindrical grinding means turning the head (or the table) 90 degrees and so the grinding wheel is further away.

I may wait and see wrt the t&c grinder. Eventhough it has a clarkson spindle, It also came with the original Hercus spindle (or at least some of the parts that were still OK) and so I am yet to decide whether to attempt to re-instate it back to original. If that's at all possible anyway, it will require making some of the parts from scratch. The clarkson spindle modification is quite good and very functional, but it looks terrible!
