    Default Bandsaw coolant system

    New coolant system for bandsaw.
Bandsaw Pump. 12 volt brushless motor – 12 volt, .6 amp. Gear pump, no ratings for pump output. Head height well over 1 metre running off 6 volt, 300 ma.

For anyone interested, I’ve just replaced the coolant system on my BS–5 bandsaw.
Previously I used a fountain pump, but as the pump had to be submerged I found it messy and the magnet tended to clog up with the fine swarf the bandsaw produced, siezing the motor. I run the new bandsaw pump from a 6 volt, 300 ma power supply, the pump is of the gear type so the internal magnet isn’t exposed to the fine swarf. I mounted the pump external to the resevoir so cutting down on the mess when changing coolant. The pump delivers coolant to the head and then back to the reservoir in a continuous loop. A T barb diverts some of the coolant to a reticulation tap and then on to the hose supplying coolant to the bandsaw blade, turning the coolant tap on or off has no affect the continuous loop.
The filter system is comprised of four magnets mounted inside a small diameter PVC pipe. The PVC pipe is mounted at a very slight angle, and as the coolant flows over the magnets most (I hope) of the swarf is trapped. The coolant then flows through a reticulation filter which further filters the coolant before returning it to the resevoir. Time will tell how well the two filters work, at the moment all is working fine.
A video of the system working can be viewed here:

Incidentally, it;s not as noisy as it appears in the video

Can you please tell me where you got the pump. I played the video over and over but can't quite pick it up.
to my deaf ear it sounds like "bali express" but no such thing in google.

    Thanks

    Default Pumps

    aliexpress.com.au.

You can also get them on ebay now: UN3F 12V Direct Current Micro Brushless Devices Submersible Electric Water Pump | eBay

Don't know how long the motor will last though - unproven at the moment. It is listed suitable as submersible or non submersible, the waterproofing doesn't look good enough to submerse though.

There is another type of pump I'm currently using on my lathe: very sturdy unit and I've been using it for a while now. it is a centrifugal pump though, so the coolant does come in contact with the magnet. This one is also listed as submersible and is a lot better made than the other. Both can be run dry and both are self priming so can be installed above the coolant level.

I don't use either as submersibles - too messy, both are mounted external to the reservoir.

Can post the lathe coolant system with the better pump if you're interested.

To tell the truth, unless like me you enjoy ‘reinventing the wheel’ or playing around with stuff like this, you may be better off buying a coolant pump from Hafco.

You can get them on alexpress and ebay but generally they are the same price or more (freight).

    Hafco.

If you have three phase power they are around half price on aliexpress.

    Aliexpress.

Another option is to make your own (something I have been meaning to do). Centrifugal pumps aren't hard to make and small second hand motors are quite cheap.

I wonder if the motors are ∆ wound? If so a budget ( $70) level low power VSD could be used to generate the 3 phase plus speed control which would provide flow control.

The cheapest pumps are to be found by the side of the road during council pickup up week in old washing machines and dishwashers.
Mine seems to be holding up well, and I just picked up another pump from a dead machine with a fried motherboard that is less than two years old and deemed "not worth repairing"

Thanks for the info. I have a flood coolant system on band saw; very messy but I'm good with it though.
