Thread: BONELLE T&C Grinder

I've seen some reviews on it, but none really answer any of my questions.
Has anyone made /used the Bonelle tool and cutter grinder? How much experience is required to make it? What sort of equipment was used, besides a mill and lathe, is anything special required ie. dividing head etc.? What sort of time frame did it take to make? Sorry for so many questions, but I would like to know, before committing myself to the work involved, then finding out I need to buy/obtain extra equipment, tools etc.

Having a quick flick through the plans I reckon you would need a rotary table for some items.

As regards time, apart from saying many many hours, its hard to be too specific.

Have decided to bite the bullet and make one. Already have the plans and some 50mm steel plate to use as the base instead of Cast Iron, don't think it will make much difference, apart from machinability? As I have a 7X12 lathe and X2 mill, it will be interesting as to whether the machines can do the job. Will try to upload pics and WIP as I go.

There is an article in the current MEW by a guy that built one using a small Myford lathe and a small mill. The article is about sharpening cutters but may be an interesting read.

Sorry, my memory isnt as good as I thought. The guy in MEW built a Quorn not a Bonelle. I had been reading up on the Bonelle and put 2 and 2 together and didnt come up with 4.

That's alright Roger, I failed maths at school too. My thoughts were to implement some of the Quorn type equipment like the micrometer attachment. Instead of making the collet holder, I plan on using a ER32 Collet holder, that way I don't have to make a heap of different collets.

Thanks for the offer Michael,. I have a friend that has a small Hercus, his son has a little bit bigger lathe about 8' BC and 20"swing, a very large milling machine, surface grinder and just about anything else that one would need.
