Do you have the ability to finish machine a back plate to suit the chuck that you eventually get?

Yes, it's a complete POS and belongs on a wood lathe at best.
Sorry but really that's the poorest excuse for a metalworking 4 jaw chuck that I've ever seen. Closer to a faceplate.
Having said that, Joe is quite right - you could make some soft jaws up for it and bore them to whatever ID you need. You certainly can't do worse.

Oh boy. I'm glad I asked you to photograph that.
That looks a lot like a woodworking chuck (construction ) to me. I too would give up on that. The jaws are only supported (prevented from tilting out or in under pressrue) by the washers under the nuts.
I actually can;t see how the chuck body is held concentrically....
I really agree with the above comments: try and find or buy a new chuck with the jaws held in proper tracks in the chuck body - not just elongated bolt holes.Cheers, Joe

If you have a chuck in mind already,I can make a semi finished backplate for you.
If you need the back plate finished that can be done as well.
The chuck would need to be supplied for final fitting.

haha. yeah. I've been informed on how bad it is. I'm quite embarrassed, but that is what came with the lathe.
That's very generous of you Pipeclay.
Where are you located?
I'm considering this 4 jaw chuck.

Because of the weight - shipping from the US might be quite costly! I suspect that could find something at a similar price in Melbourne. Give Melbourne Tool in Campellfield a call. They often have specials - I've been watching there too....

...and then there is this beauty! http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/321434085946
Someone here could make you an adapter or backplate to suit your spindle thread, I'm sure.Cheers, Joe

Yes, you're right, shipping is just on $100 for that chuck.
I am looking locally too. The backplate is the main issue however. The chuck can be had from most places fairly easily.

You may of miss understood my reply,I can make it but there would be a cost.
The chuck you listed would run out around $170US.
Mick moyles in Sydney has a 6" new for $154.
As said you maybe able to locate one in Victoria for similar pricing.
The one listed on ebay already has the thread to suit a Hercus lathe,if you use this it would require a back plate to be fitted to it and then either 3 or 4 tapped or through holes put into the chuck itself to accommadate the back plate.

No no, I understood that there would be a cost. I will keep looking. Once I find an appropriate jaw I will let you know. Probably will be within the next few days. Then we can discuss cost.
i will buy that backing plate from littlemachineshop with the m39 thread already.

It would probably be cheaper to have it made here, when you take into account shipping.
