if your going to retrofit with a VFD why do you want a stepped pulley?

the FVD should give you all the speeds you want...wood lathe shouldnt require as much torque as a metal lathe...should it?

For the work I have in mind, I would be able to get away with having single pulleys with 1:1 ratio.
But I can see the need for a slower speed if I was to get into turning other stuff, so as to have a bit more torque, and to keep the motor speed up a little for cooling.

I am looking to have a useable range of approx 200 to 3000 rpm without changing belts, this is doable with the motor and VFD I have.
So yes, I could probably get away with not having stepped pulleys, but having them would give me some comfort knowing I have the option.
