The rule for a vitrified wheel, (although I do realise these are reinforced wheels), is that a slower speed has the effect of weakening the bond, leading to more rapid wear, high speeds have the opposite effect - up to maximum permissable speed of course. Do you experience more rapid wearing of your discs than if they were run at proper angle grinder speeds?
Yep they do seem to wear faster which is probably why I go through so many but when bought in bulk they are cheap so it doesn't worry me so much although having to constantly replace then is a nuisance.
In terms of wear, I can easily test this. I know an angle grinder with a thin kerf disc removes 11 times more (weight of) metal while cutting than the disc loses weight. I'll do this test later today.

It will be very interesting to measure the volume and dust particle size profiles being generated at the slower speeds. I did this already for a grinder (http://www.woodworkforums.com/showthread.php?t=183111) - I don't see many metal workers visiting this thread - perhaps they should.

I've borrowed the particle measuring gear again from the Uni and will do some dust testing on metal work activity and this time I will post these in the MW forum. The tests take a while and it means I can't do much else in the shed while I'm doing the time based testing. Even if I move around in the shed it disturbs the measurements.

could be a sign of the future...all Metro trains (Melbourne train operator)maintenance depots have a blanket ban on 9'' grinders on SITE...no use..no possession.thankfully 5'' and 7'' grinders have improved to trade level.

Yep, many establishments have put the good old 9" in the VERBOTEN basket.
Interestingly enough, Hilti ran some trials a few years ago that placed the 7" at the top of the tree as far as efficiency in removing metal went.

I would have to fully agree with that, used to work for a steel company supplying lintels and the good old 7" grinder was the most efficient beast in the shop for cleaning the ends up once they had been oxy cut.

How many of us pay attention to the date codes on cut off wheels?

Was years before I realised they even had use by dates. I do still use discs past the date but do so with some trepidation.

Some manufacturers do show the date of manufacture on the box but I have never seen a use by date on any grinding or cutting disc.

That makes to whole exercise pointless, especially for someone like me, whose grinder use is sporadic at best.

Having said that, I might just ditch the discs I have and buy a new one when next needed. Most of mine are decades old by now.
