Default Verdict Junior - what's it for?

I've recently 'inherited' an old metal lathe, and it came with a "Verdict Junior" gauge.

Can anyone tell me what this gauge is used for and how to use it? I can find a few similar tools on ebay, but I still don't know what it's for.

My guess is maybe it's used for somehow measuring height variations along a piece of metal, or something like that. It looks like it attaches to something else, as it has a screw on the side of it, but I wouldn't know what to attach it to or how to move it around to take measurements.
Good things come to those who wait, and sail right past those who don't reach out and grab them.

It's a type of dial test indicator, but without the round dial, you would use it on the lathe to measure run-out and lots of other uses same way you would use a normal DTI.

Thanks, that makes sense now. I didn't know what a DTI was, but internet searching on this found some good descriptions of how to use it, and also has helped me to identify a couple of other pieces that are with the lathe. I've done wood turning before, but I'm totally new to metal turning. This lathe is kind of set up for both. Now that I know what the DTI is used for, I'll go practice centering some stock.
