Dating Sidchrome tools
g'day guys, first post here.
I'm Matt, I'm 16, and have a growing love for anything tool or workshop related! Today I was exploring my pops shed, and came across these, amongst the rest. Anybody want to give me an idea of a time frame for these? As they are very different to my Aussie made Sidchrome, which I believe is from the 70s.
At another point in time Ill be posting a few photos of my collection to gather some information about it, but unfortunately am away from home for a bit. Hopefully someone can help out, cheers, Matt.

They still show the name sidchrome and not Siddons so I would think they are around late 70'S to early 80's.
What markings do your
pre 70 ones have on tem.

Pipeclay, I don't agree. My tools were all purchased between 1965 and 1971. All the Sidchrome ones are marked "Sidchrome". I think Siddons branded tools were earlier than that even.

They appear to be as Pipeclay said.
Earlier ones were marked Sidchrome but weren't chrome plated from my experience.
RobThe worst that can happen is you will fail.
But at least you tried.

These are some of mine, to the above poster, theyare all marked Sidchrome, with the sizes,
And Made in Australia on the reverse. All the open Enders, and some sockets are supposedly from the same era, but not marked made in Australia , any ideas as to where these are made?

I did post a reply, but unsure if it posted. Morrisman, that's the worst thing around here, gets into everything. One day they will be, but he's still got a few years left in him yet! There's plenty of Minimax and woodworking gear to go along with it too.

The SAE designation as well as AF shown on them might give you a clue.
All my Sidchrome AF spanners, which I bought new in the early 60's, show AF only and aren't marked 'Made in Australia'.
I have some that are marked 'Made in Australia', which I probably bought later as replacements for lost ones, and they are all marked only as AF also.
Maybe other members can shed some light on the SAE designation time frame for you.

Would just like to put it out there that if anybody has any they would be interested in selling/swapping let me know.
I also have lathe/milling machine gear, and a lot of assorted quality cutting tools (drills, taps, dies)

I have inherited some Whitworth spanners marked Sidchrome, not chromed and with both SAE and AF markings. I believe they date from before my birth which was in 1960.

Dating Sidchrome
Hi Matt
They look about the same as the ones I bought back in the late 50's and early 60's.
I am not sure but I believe that they started having a lot of their tools manufactured offshore in the late 60's.

Hi Matt,
Welcome to the Forum!
There is a group of spanner and wrench collectors associated with the HTPAA, HTPAA :: HTPAA Home they put out a newsletter "The Spanner and Wrench Collector" I'd contact them and they will put you in touch with the Sidchrome experts
( Yes there are people who specialise in collecting Sidchrome tools )
The HTPAA publication "The Tool Chest" has published a number of articles on dating Sidchrome spanners, most of them written by Graeme Plaw.
