Default small steel round head slotted wood screws #2, #3, & #4

I have searched and searched and cant find steel RH slotted wood screws. Any one know where they are available? even plated will be ok...I can burn that off

alternatively, can they be be made on a lathe? if so, how.....i only need enough for my model cannon
If I can make them on the lathe at least I can make them with a square head making it look even more authentic eh?

Otherwise, I will have to use brass...and then put some patina on them I suppose..

    any other ideas

I'd never say that. Its a wood screw. Do you really care what the "thread" looks like? I've no idea how important pitch is. I'd guess if you really got down to it it would depend on the type of wood and gain direction. But surely you arent chasing the last 10%. I've been known to use BSW in wood. I doubt the taper is needed. Make one and see.
Time to add a taper turner to your to do list?

Plus a ball turner along with a bitty slitting saw holder.

Richard, if the thread wasn't too important maybe small machine screws might look the part. E. J. Winter or some other model engineering supplier might stock something suitable or adaptable. If the thread was important from a holding viewpoint, how about a glued -into -the - wood threaded insert to suit the machine screws. ??

    Hi BT,
I think this is more what eskimo is looking for (though smaller? I dont know screw # sizes off the top of my head)

36 x NETTLEFOLDS 2" x 1/2" SQUARE HEAD SELF COLOUR COACH SCREWS GKN SCREW | eBay

So he saves on the ball turner and slitting saw holder.

I purchased some no 2 brass, slotted head wood screws 6 years ago from "Woodcraft Fittings" 4 Leake st Forrestdale West Aust
    6112 Ph 08 9397 0305 Fax 08 93970305.
Perhaps give them a try if they are still operating.
I like the traditional slotted head screws for fastening hinges & clasps to small woodworking projects as the phillips hd screws just do not look right !
Like yourself, searched every where, however these were the people who helped.
    regards

Slotted screws do look better than cross point. Some modern classy cars use them on door locks, where they are visible with an open door.
If you want countersunk screw slots all to be "headed" so they are lined up the same way, it can be a challenge. Not too bad with wood, but metal fastenings might need trial fit, see how it lines up, then make the countersink a bit deeper and try again.
I heard a few years ago that there are no more screws being made in Australia.

Headed or Dressed, same thing. You either have some screws that are loose or others verging on snapping. I'll stick with tight.

After looking up a screw chart, mine are obviously too big. I'm off to De Young salvage I will look for you.

I had worked out that I'd need a taper turner to make em

wonder of that is go and would really work...a BSW or even some other strange tpi course thread and if that fails glue em in as Bob says for extra holding power

A tapered thread just allows it to cut while its pulling its way in to the timber...does'nt it?
