Would it be ok to use the gooseneck itself as the negative conductor? would this cause any problems? This would make it much easier as I only need to use one wire inside.
That could be a bad idea 12VAC might work, it might not, depends justvwhats inside that light. For $28 I'm not sure I'd want to find out.
It might let the smoke out, its might not turn on, it might only be on half the time.

I think you're better of getting 12VDC. likely plenty of covertors on ebay that will do the job for a few $.

Thanks for pointing that out Stuart. I did not even think of that. I would hope to remember to look for some form of dc conversion at the time but now I I know not to even try it. No problems there. I have a 12v, 1A power pack from an old router (Computer! Nearly forgot I was on a metalwork forum. Spent a lot of time on Whirlpool lately) plus many others I am sure. The router plug pack is sitting on a cupboard next to the front door so I know where it is. Only reason I chose that one. I hope it will be enough for a 10w light. Anything bigger and I will probably have to buy one. Still a cheap fix tho.

I have just noticed there are now local sellers selling cheap LED 12V flood lights in the 20W and 10W range... Cheaper then you can get from overseas.. I just bought a few more... One of the 20W ones I bought from myled has a blown driver... It is cheaper to buy a new unit then a new 12V 20W LED driver..

I went and bought ten which were supposed to be 12V 20W LED flood lights from a local ebay supplier..

They arrived today, so I compared them to the 20W LED's I bought from MYLED...

Firstly the locally sold ones are not 20W... I would say based on current drawn they are 10W... However they do put out a lot of light and are probably more suited to machine tool use.. they are also much much smaller... The LED itself is probably 1/4 the size and the unit itself very small compared to the MYLED one.. They are also much much cheaper then the MYLED ones... I am happy with them for the price I paid..

They look like the ones I have as outdoor security lighting, 5 for $40, so figure $8 each. they have them in 12V, but I'm using the 240V versions.
