    Hi Josh,

    What I really like about your photos is the stuff in the background, Humungous vice, rotary tables etc. In one of the other shots there is a Deckel tooling cabinet. Truly, cost is not a significant consideration for these workshops.Althouh having said that, they would require pretty good kit to do what they do.

    That is one of the nice things about pure research; you don't have to justify the capital for equipment in terms of just a few years. That little side workshop is very nice.

    I'm running out of things that are naturally black.....

    I'm uploading a time lapse video of the tour we got through the CERN workshop(see now +~5hr for link). It is a pretty poor video, but if you find a particular section in the video you want to see better let me know and I'll find the raw JPG's.

    A rather large lump of charcoal(or something else thats mostly carbon.....not techinically carbon fibre)

    The material is stiffer than cast iron and lower thermal expansion coefficient than granite..

    You could cheat and google "clic metrology network" makes fascinating reading.. how to make a 50 km straight line..
