I am warming to the idea of a QCTP now. Watching Keith Fenner videos has shown me how much they can speed up your work. My research says that the wedge type is a bit better than the piston type. Then there is the Dickson. Unfortunately the cost of a QCTP to fit a 16" swing lathe is prohibitive to say the least. Therefore I am going to have to make one. I have not had much success at all finding plans to make a wedge type. I shall keep looking. It will be some time before I am ready to make it.

I have an Aloris QCTP (wedge type) I got it after using one at work and decided that they were great. The other benefit is that you don't have to worry about keeping sets of shims around the place.
The main types seem to be the Aloris style (either wedge or piston), the multfix type or the dickson type. All have their fans but one of the reasons I went for the Aloris type was that the holders are easier to make up at home. As that is one thing that you will want more and more of, I would suggest it is as good a reason as any to go this way.

I will need a CXA for my lathe. The price for an Aloris QCTP with 4 holders I just found on the net was a touch under $US1000 .

Mike the QCTP in your link looks like a BXA which wont suit either Peter's lathe or mine LOL.

Ebay has second hand Aloris QCTP in the CXA sizes for around half that.
Second hand has always worked out for me but I have heard of some people who have had problems.
However, sellers like CTC , Shars and others have knock offs for less again.

Half that price is still well out of my price range.

    Thanks for the links Michael.

    CTC is $385 including freight.
    Enco I didn't check

Tools4Cheap website about $600 for imported CXA. Nothing on their Ebay Store in CXA.

As I have said, It will be some time before I am ready to make it and that also applies to buying it.

Concrete for the base of the lathe is a first priority.

I do have to admit that I have spent all my money for now.

This week I took possession of a pair of Ascension speakers which cost almost as much as the mill. Its the first real money I have spent on HiFi for years and was easily worth it.

Now I have to start saving again.

    Hi Peter,
If i bought mine again i would get a new or second hand aloris wedge type post, and holders probably from tools for cheap. The one i have is a BXA wedge type from CDCO, the quality is crap, it works ok now that i have replaced the central bush, it had huge backlash before i did that. The tools for cheap holders may be twice the price of Fanks but they are at least twice as good....There is a pic comparison here http://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/yo...ml#post1652568

    Hi Guys,

I'm also wanting a QCT for my Myford but people want silly money for them ! So I've started collecting material to build one. The one that I like the look of is
the "Stevenson" wedge type. I found the drawings on the net. I don't remember exactly where. Anyway I've attached some pictures/drawings.
    I hope they are useful.

    Regards:
    BaronJ.

John has got a good reputation so it should be a workable design. From the size it looks like it has been designed for a Myford sized machine, so you might have to think carefully about scaling it. This design (like the Dickson post) has the draw back that a spanner is required to change tools. I prefer a tool free post although if you are scaling up there might then be room for a lever & knob arrangement.
