Put a yellow lens on the camera did we?
Looks alarmingly familiar in there, i think Vernier may have had a good look before designing their mills.....
Nothing worse than the plop, tink of a part ending up buried in the bowls of a gearbox. At least its not a major problem that needs fixed.
Cheers,

I was very happy to find that is such a trivial repair, plus i got the chance to flush out the gearbox of old grubby oil and gearbox crumbs, that reminds me: i need to put a couple of magnets in there before i seal it all back up to pick up itty bitty bits of metal out of the oil.
nope, just a couple of Ray's super bright LED flood lights, that way I don't need a torch to see inside the casting while fiddling about , it does not look quite so yellow in person

The Y-axis power feed drive repair is completed, I had it knocked off mostly a week or so back but still needed to fit a spring loaded over center pin installed, I had thought it would slid in from the top with a retaining screw, I was wrong.... After taking the head off completely it still needed to be feed in from the bottom through the gearbox. So off with the gearbox cover again, this time made much harder by the use of some loctite gasket after it was reassembled last time. With the cover off I could not see, feel or get anywhere near the hole where I knew the close fitting pin needed to go.... After some head scratching, string, wire, couple of magnets, forceps a menagerie of screwdrivers and a lot of swearing and help from Ray the pin is back in place and the feed is working wonderfully with very satisfying clicks.
During the week we also ordered up some epoxy paints after being continually let down by our usual supplier of Salcomix we went for Dulux.
Dulux Duremax GPE Zinc Phosphate Primer
Dulux Duremax GPE in RAL6011
and
Dulux Luxathane R in RAL6011
Not completely sure how well the epoxies will go with the temperatures so low (5 hours for touch dry at 10C) at least there are no bugs to speak of atm.
I also dropped off some of the exterior panels to be sand blasted today as well.

Off beat colours
Hi Josh,
Sometimes strange colours work and sometimes they don't. Eventually I'll be looking to get mine resprayed as well. I like off beat however I want a set of colours that works well together. Red and black could work well.
Good to see that you are deeply involved in the "guts" of your mill. If I have problems at least I'll know who to call - "MillBusters" ? doesn't sound quite right does it?
Cheers

Yeah, mythbusters kind of killed the busters suffix, but I get your point. I love that movie. I'm still fumbling my way around the insides, fumbling being the appropriate word, and trying to roll back the clock on its mortality. I'm still cleaning, I pulled out another kilo of grease and swarth and belt dust yesterday, and that was with the bellows, I would hate to think what it might be like without them..
Has yours landed yet?

Spindle Oil
I have been looking for some spindle oil for the Deckel, The closest match I have found that is available is Mobil Velocite Oil Numbered Series #6, but the smallest container I have been able to get a quote on is 20L pails :S, anybody else need 10.0 cSt spindle oil?

Ha! They're train colours not Euro mill colours.

Bob, You're giving me ideas that Ray wouldn't like.
Moot anyway as the paint has been tinted already.

Spindle Oil
Hi Josh,
Mine was in Brisbane this morning. May, or, may not still be there. It should be with the third transport company by now, but maybe it is and maybe it isn't!
I have a tilt tray with a large hiab organised for the final 19km.
So, this week I expect. I have cleared all the plastic sheeting (I used this for curing the concrete) off the shed slab in anticipation.
I would be happy to share in the cost and take part of the oil. Not sure I need 10 litres, 5 litres is probably a few years worth for me. What's it cost per 20L?? Perhaps a couple more people will want some??
Cheers

That sounds real thin Josh. Mobil suggest its use in high speed spindles, how fast will the Deckel spin?
My HS head tops out at 6000 rpm. Schaublin specified Mobil DTE Light ISO32 hydraulic oil back in the early sixties for the 13's spindles. A discussion with Mobil's technical department led to my purchase of 20 litres of DTE Heavy Medium ISO68. Mind you, a purchase I'm still a touch uncertain about.
A concern I have is how much the original oil formulation may have changed over the course of the past half century. I purchased 20 litres of Mobil Vactra II way oil about 8 years ago. Later, Greg Q pointed out that the formulation of that oil had been changed, tackifiers had been removed to suit the printing industry and there were more appropriate oils available from Mobil for way lubrication. With 18 litres of the stuff left, I had no hesitation in using it liberally this afternoon on some rusty Acrow prop threads. The 120 dollar outlay for the wrong way oil was my mistake, I should have undertaken a more thorough investigation. I'm now thinking my spindle oil research could have been more exhaustive.
Anyone else need some oil for their Acrow props?

Sorry BT, the official colour scheme is Reseda Green (RAL 6011) and Dark grey : (RAL 7016) to desecrate such magic machines with anything other than factory original colours is tantamount to the same crime as that of etching precision instruments with the demented scribblings of some half witted, overly possessive, semi literate tool room apprentice.... ( sorry I was quoting... )
Regards
Ray
