    Default question re CQ6230

i have been reading everything i can find the last few days and have just got off the phone to gasweld , all i wanted to know was is the lead screw on this lathe imperial or metric and has the machine got power cross feed , now in this thread ( http://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/cq...-lathe-132768/ ) the lathe has imp screw and has power cross feed , but that was afew years ago and there is no mention on the web site specs for the lathe so i rang gasweld , first guy didnt know second guy said metric screw and never knew re the cross feed but would check and ring me back , and he did , and tells me that it is indeed imperial screw but no power cross feed i asked him if i would be better ringing toolex and he said we are toolex . now i wonder if he is wrong re the cross feed or has it been changed latley and no longer has it .
seems to me that you get just that bit more with the white and blue ones ( al335 ) from h&f but not as good an overall finish .

As far as I know they have never changed, give Newcastle since that is the head office.

They do have an imperial lead screw and power saddle and cross feed, they are the same type of machine as the H&F one but are finished better and have a different gearbox set up. They also come with back plate chucks instead of direct mount ones.

I am going into town this week so I will call in and have a look for you, though the floor stock one has been on display for 20 years, LOL. But I will ask and double check for you.

Just to add, I think the imperial lead screw is far better than metric and so do a few others here. With metric you have 3 thread dial gears you need to change as well, but for imperial you have one.

If your doing metric with the imperial lead screw you just reverse the lathe which is easy, and for imperial you drop in by the tread dial numbers.

I will have a talk to him when I go in and tell him about your stuff around, who knows you might get a better deal on one as I have sold 3 lathes for him lately.
I have got a good price for a few members here, so he maybe able to ring through up there for you, I will ask anyway.

They overhauled there website about a year ago and it doesn't look like anything has changed.

If you blow up one of the pictures the black lever in the middle on the front of the apron is the power feed saddle and cross feed.

    Default Lead screw

Horses for courses mate. I have a metric lead screw on my lathe with a thread dial, as above with the Imperial lead screw, I just engage the little doova when it rotates around to the mark and start cutting the thread. Metric of course, have cut Imperial threads just for the sake of trying out the lathe and have adopted the method of engaging reverse to get the cutting tool back to the start.

I grew up in an Imperial world with pounds, shillings and pence, inches, yards & chains. Have embracd the metric world with glee, and do not conside myself a dinosaur, as some gen Y's think.

    Hi DD,
Yeah I agree, just personal preference. I know RC ordered a imperial lead screw lathe specially as the place only had metric, and I would to if I bought a bigger lathe.

I just find it easier just reversing the lathe for metric threads, rather than mucking around with different gears for a metric lead screw. And then theres no mucking around with the thread dial for imperial ones.

For what it's worth, both the Toolex the lathe and the Hare and Forbes lathes this size both have imperial lead screws, so you don't have a choice unless you buy another more expensive lathe.
