how did you centre the 2 pieces of brass in the 4 jaw ? If the 2 halves of the flat sltock are not centred, then the two halves of the bush would not be concentric

    That dosen't really matter.
As long as you fit them as a matched pair of halves.

If you think about it, since both pieces of brass were cut from the same length of bar then the centre line has to be in the centre. All I did was clamp the two pieces in the four jaw and adjusted the jaws so that all four corners were the same distance from the tool tip. I could have used a dial indicator but for this job absolute precision isn't needed.

I turned the major diameters first and then used a hose clip to clamp the two halves together so that there was no danger of the two pieces splitting under drilling and reaming forces. I've put some more photos of the work on here.

    Hi Guys,

    Some more photos.

These three photos show the "Moor & Wright" long tapping wrench that I mentioned earlier along with the split bush.
I also mentioned that I had discovered a minor issue ! Though it can't be seen on the photos, where the shaft has been stamped with the makers name and tool number, the shaft has been distorted very slightly and is oval at that point. This means that the bush fits fine above and below that stamping.
Annoying ! I will post some more photos in a couple of months when I will get chance to do some more work.

    Regards:
    BaronJ.

    Hi All,
As promised some more photos. Sorry it took so long before I could post them.
I've still to re-paint some of the parts, so some bits look a bit tatty.

TS01 and TS01a show a couple of views of the finished stand.

TS02 Shows the split clamp that is used to secure the support arm to the vertical post. The arm is 1" square 1/8" thick wall alloy tube. I used 3/4"
Silver steel bar 13" long for the post and the base is an old 15Lb cast iron barbell weight, faced off smooth with a brass insert used to fill the centre hole.

TS03 shows a view of the top of the arm along with the tapping chuck and split brass bush used to support it.
I also made a thick alloy disk with holes in it to support other larger taps that don't fit into the tapping chuck.
The white plastic knob is a soda bottle cap warmed up and pressed over a brass disk with a 4BA screw through it used to tighten the split clamp.
I also made a clamp (not visible) that fits inside the square tube to secure the split brass bush. I found that it tended to wander out of the hole in use.
Since it needs to be removed to extract the tapping chuck I made a band that is secured with a 4BA bolt through the side of the support arm.

    Best Regards:
    BaronJ.
