    Default Mitutoyo DTI

I just picked up this DTI. It's a very nice unit, but the instructions are a bit light-on so I'm not sure whether the tip is moveable. I see guys on Youtube moving the tip of their Starrett and Interapid DTI to minimise measuring error (cosine?). Anyway, I've gently pushed on the tip of this DTI but it doesn't seem to want to move. The last thing I want to do is break it. Do any of you blokes have this model? Can you fill me in?

I am pretty sure mine is identical to that one, it will take a little bit to move it then it will move easily.

Who did you buy that one from if you don't mind me asking?

    Hi Chris,

Just push a little harder and the tip will move. When you set it up try and arrange for a minimal amount of movement on the dial, probably 1/2 a turn or less from the starting point. Then set the zero, a good rigid mounting set up is a big help.

One other tip I can recommend is to try and get a Noga mounting bracket, the fine adjustment works smoothly and is a dream to use.

    Hi Chris,
Just to add to what Ray said, Travers tools stock noga, here is the ebay listing for the bracket Ray linked above. eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d
I was going to get one for one of my indicator holders. The postage price seems a bit steep though, i have not yet asked about that.

    Cheers

Chris some of the DTIs can be quite stiff, but the mechanism through which they work means you shouldn't damage the mechanism.

A tip when adjusting them is not to push on the very tip of the contact point, instead grab the shaft of the contact point right up near the pivot. Pinch it between your fingers and by pivoting your wrist you can change the angle quite accurately without risking damaging the contact point.

Are you considering getting one? I'd be interested also. If sending multiples would cut down on the postage, count me in for one.

Thanks for the help fellas. It was stiff, but it does move! Thanks also for the Noga links. The DTI came with a swivel bracket, a holding bar and a couple of round studs that can be locked onto the dovetails. The Noga's fine adjuster would be a nice addition.

I reckon the eBay bloke is trying it on with the $48 postage. You would definitely get that in a small flat rate box. Under $20 if I recall correctly. A padded envelope is around $10 I think? That's what I would be pushing for.

Is it solid or are you just pushing the wrong way?

There should be a little lever on the back. In one position the indicator is pushed one way and in the other position it goes the other way.

    Hi Andrew,
No lever. It moves either way, it's just stiffer than I expected it to be and I didn't want to break it.

dEventually Phil, I was looking at getting a big mag stand and the clamp, I'll let you know when. If anyone else wants in just message me. I'm not sure when it will be, as usual the are too many things I want and not enough coin.....but it is high on the list.Cheers.
