    Default Waldown 8S v's 2M?

    Hi all,

Today I did a purchase on an auction, sight unseem for what is claimed to be a Waldown 8S

    image.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

Guard is gone and someone has tried to drill the table in half , and this is just from the pictures, but with that said it was only pocket change so not concerned.

The reason for purchasing was I was hoping I could use the handles for my Waldown 2M I bought a few months ago (missing 2 handles). Having now compared photos though, I think I might have purchased the baby brother.

I pick it up next week so will know for sure then, but can someone put me out of my misery, did I buy two little baby arms, or are they the same size? Is it actually a 8SN (lots of google results for 8SN, but couldn't find anything for 8S)? Is there a few of these around, in other word should I be able to move this on as a spare parts machine (assuming the parts don't fit the 2M)?

    Cheers,

    Camo

I can't comment of the machine itself but it looks like it would do up ok. They usually bring ok money.
Do you have a metal lathe? If so then its a easy job to make up a couple of handles for your drill press. The black knobs a readily available so its really just a case of machining the ends of some bright bar down and threading them to suit. The chromed shaft from car shocks makes good bar for handles if its not that badly worn that the chrome has worn through. I have to repair two of the handles on my Richardson DP as soon as I get a chance. They got snapped of when I managed to let the DP fall over when I was moving it early last year.

Where abouts in Newie are you? I'm now at Charlestown

    regards

    hi bollie7,

I had thought about the idea of making some new handles, but I am definitely more of a woodworker than a metalworker (don't have the lathe or the knowledge, although I am sure it wouldn't be rocket science, and I thought it might look funny with a couple of handles turned out of hardwood), so when I saw this in an auction that was about to end and close to home, I thought who needs to make them when you can take it off a machine that is more suited for parting anyway, so I jumped on it.

The 2M I have already put into service (originally I was going to strip it right down fix any problems, and get rid of all the green, I have discovered i hate green), but after testing it, it does not seem to have anything wrong with it (except the two missing handles), and I had a project that required a lot of drilling, so straight to work it went. I have previously only used the cheap Chinese / Tiawanese drill presses, so as you could imagine I really love using this drill press.

I felt really proud of myself, finding the easy solution to the problem, and possibly helping someone else on the forum in the process, should they need any spare parts that wouldn't fit the 2M, then I started looking closer at the pictures and thinking, it looks a bit smaller.

I guess worst case scenario, none of the parts fit the 2M, and the next person on the forum who has a Waldown 8S or 8SN requiring a part, I might be able to help and give back.

Hopefully I am wrong and they are the same size, but either way I won't be loosing sleep over it.

Oh nearly forgot I live in Morisset, but I put down Newcastle, because I figured either people would not know we're it is, or I would get all the hospital jokes.

    Cheers,

    Hello Camo,

The photo of your 8SN shows the same plastic hand nut at the end of the pinion as those fitted to the 2 and 3M. I imagine that Waldown used the same handle boss or hub on their drills equipped with this more complicated depth adjustment* which would suggest that the capstan spokes (their terminology) or handles should interchange. If they don't, the 2/3M spoke is 1/2" in diameter with a 1/2" BSW thread on the hub end. I replaced mine with 316 stainless bar. Not being a woodie, I fitted new 1 1/2" diameter black plastic ball knobs, threaded internally 1/2" BSW.

    Bob.

    * when compared to the basic setup on their cheaper drills - http://www.woodworkforums.com/attach...022-large-.jpg

PS. Camo, If you do decide to sell the drill for parts, I'd be interested in the table support / locking collar and the entire head casting with spindle and pinion (no motor, no guard ). My basic model drill has no pinch bolt to take up quill wear, yours does hence my interest. If the head casting is too much of a pain in the neck I'd still raise my hand for the collar IF you decide to dissect and sell off the drill in bits.

    Bob,

Thanks for the terminology "capstan spokes". I am pleased to say that they threaded straight in, and had the same shaft length and almost identical ball (the 2M was slightly better formed, perfect roundness, but same size and close enough), so now instead of being down 2, I now have a spare.

I haven't really had a chance to touch anything on the rest of the 8SN (I can now confirm from the plate it was 8SN and not 8S, the N had some grease covering it), so can't comment yet on the condition of the rest of it, or if the parts are in suitable condition.

I will try to have a closer look over the coming weeks, I will send you a PM, if I am going to part it out (a day or so before listing it in the for sale section), I wont be trying to make a profit, if anything just cover my costs or some of them (not that it cost me much), but I wonder how heavy the main body section would be, given that you live in WA (could be a bit expensive to post?).

    Cheers,

    Camo
