Default Seized up starrett last word indicator!

Hey guys, I have a new starrett last word indicator which I have only used once 6months ago to indicate a vice on my mill. I went to use use it again last week and it's all locked up? No rust, dirt oil anything.. I bought it new, indicated the vice, wiped it down and put it back in the box!

The tip is frozen and the leaver on the side which reverses the dial hand moves but does not move the dial anymore?

Any ideas guys? It's a bit disappointing as I bought a starrett wanting it to last. I did a bit of research on it and the starrett/mitu camps are split pretty evenly. I think the Mitutoyo was probably the better choice now.

    Hi Ben,

IF they are still made the same way as the one I'm looking at(thanks BT). The only thing I can see would cause it is a little side load on the stylus/arm. which can disengauge the other end of the arm from the gear that moves the dail/needle.

I'll take a couple of pictures.

    Ben,

If you still can't sort it out after Stu's photo essay, send me a PM with your email address and I'll wire you some photos of pages from a repair manual.

    Bob.

    Unlikely BT,
I've just realised that what I am talking about can probably only happen when the side cover is off.
    Pictures anyway.
First as it should be, second as it shouldnt be.
Moving the lever almost always re-engages it anyway.

    Having said that.
For this to be the case
"The tip is frozen and the leaver on the side which reverses the dial hand moves but does not move the dial anymore"
As I'm seeing it either the front bearing it locked or the gear is disengauged.

BTW The lever not only reverses the way the dial hand moves it reverses the direction the stylus is moved in.

    Thanks guys!
I have to drive into Coffs this arvo to do the monthly shop and take the family to the airport. I will open it up tomorrow and take a look.
I was going to have a look inside but the only article I could find on the last word's stated I needed to go through the dial face and use a special tool to remove the dial arm. It just looks way too small for sausage fingers to pull without breaking!

Will let you know what I find!
    Thanks again.

Thanks Bob and Stu! I took a peek at it before I went to the shops. It's as you described it in you photos Stu. I'm guessing it's just a matter of using a small plastic pick and moving it back in place?

Bloody tops! I had it out last week for a job and was a bit peeved with it that it was seized. I did not want to force anything or open it as it just looks too small and cute. I just grabbed another dial indicator. I should have put a post up last week!

I cant believe there has been 6 posts and no one joke about this dial gauge not working and having its "last word".

    Thanks for the help guys!
I fiddled and prodded and made tools to try and get the hand off the post so I could strip and clean it. I could not lift the hand off.
I ended up sending it to PCS measurements in Newcastle. The guys there are tops. They fixed it for nothing and posted it back express the same day!
I think I'm going to put it up as a separate post.

I for one think you should. That sort of service needs to be credited.
