    Default Sheraton Conquest Head Gear

I have done something really stupid and broken the fibre gear in the head of my Sheraton Conquest Lathe (ex-Army)

I am looking for a replacement.

I have tried "Australian Metal Working Hobbyist" - with no luck.

Tried 600 Machine Tools - but they don't respond to my emails.

Any help in finding a replacement gear would be much appreciated.

    Cheers!

    Neil.

Neil, if you can post details like diameters, number of teeth, thickness and all that other good stuff it is possible that someone has a spare. The other option is to make one up, but try the easy option first.
(Perhaps a photo of the broken gear too - we have some ingenious fixers here who may be able to suggest a way to repair)

Where is the damage? Is this your lathe or a catalogue photo?
As mentioned earlier, some dimensions, please. I have a collection of gears including fibre gears. Something may be adaptable - depending on the damage.

If you elect to remake a fibre gear ensure that is is cut from flat stock as opposed to cylindrical. The weave in cloth/resin material is radial in sheet material and axial in cylidrical, rendering the strength of the part critically different. "Micarta" is the brand name of the resin impregnated cloth composite with which I am most familiar.

BTW...my lathe employs similar gears which I have reproduced in acetal plastic with great results.

I am pretty sure another name for that material is Tufnol, a lot of Macsons used to have these gears also.
