Lathe motor problem
When starting, after standing idle for awhile (overnight), the motor on my lathe runs very slowly for around 10 seconds+ before hitting top speed, after successive start ups, the delay shortens to around 3-4 seconds. I’m hoping/guessing it’s a capacitor. Any ideas?

Which one?
I'm guessing the starter cap is the one with the highest value? TOSS?

Nope
Nope, I have the Al250G. But never heard of a Toss.

So I guess that means you couldn't give a TOS?

Toss-er
You've probably just heard some refer to me as that Toss-er. Anyway, just did some more checks: with the belt off the motor starts fine and all the connection are ok, so I guess that cinches the deal, need a new start cap! There was another forum member who bought an AL250G, his caps blew up - spectacularly.

Depending on temperature, it could be related to bearings and/or lubricant needing to warm up. If you took the belts off and it was fine then it could be that. I used to have that issue on a Dai-shin lathe that I had once.

Best Bet
Maybe, I’ll replace it anyway just to make sure it doesn’t go at an inopportune time, just have to find someone who stocks them. I call it ‘Tongleh’s Law’, plenty of experience with that one.

Hi there,
Ebay sell starter caps. Quite a few sellers last time I looked. OR, it could be a good excuse for a DC or 3 phase VFD conversion. No starter caps needed!

Vroom, vroom.
I never thought of looking on eBay, but will do now. I could look at a DC motor and VSD I suppose, imagine the possibilities: a VSD and a geared head… Vroom, vroom.
