Any one know what drill press this is??
Hey guys, recently got my drill press at my house from my dads house, but i dont think it is a waldown though or maybe it is? Its hard to tell when there is nothing on there to show what it is :/
There has been a build up of surface rust in some areas so im just going to use vinegar to get rid of it and i have also noticed that some parts on the drill press are homemade, like the motor mount.
The return spring for the spindle has had its days and wondering were i can get one from and im thinking of giving it a restoration maybe, what would be a good colour?

Cooper I don't know what brand of drill that is but it sure looks like a solid old girl.
You could heat the end of the spring to orange and put a new bend on it with a pair of pointy nose pliers, then just let it cool.

Well i Dont think mine is a waldown must be something else. The front guard on the waldown is more oval than mine and the waldown has a symbol, mine seems to be flat, must have had a badge or something that goes on mine.
Not sure of many other drill presses that are made like mine

Similar column/castings/motor mount?

Good to see your pics. I can't tell from them if the return spring is broken or not. If its not broken it might be just a case of its unwound. I'm trying to remember what the procedure to wind them up is. Its been a while but I think on my old Richardson the outside end of the spring is anchored to the machine and the inside end is fixed to a cast iron cover. This cover is attached to the end of the quill pinion with a nut. Loosen the nut a little bit (while holding onto the cover thingy) and then turn it (while holding the pinion stationary) to increase or decrease the tension on the spring. You might have to make up something like that for yours. Maybe someone else has some pics of one in bits so you can get a better idea of what I mean.

Sounds like the spring needs another turn of preload. Please be careful and wear safety glasses. I broke one of those springs once trying the same thing.
I thought the same thing about the motor mounts looking like my Tough, but it seems a small resemblance.
Edit: Make sure the quill is moving freely before over stressing the return spring.
