    Default Redwood Machinery closing? Adelaide

For information of the Adelaide members, when I drove past Redwood Machinery on South Road today I noticed that they had a "closing down sale" sign out the front. I couldn't stop at the time but it might be worth following up.

its been up for a while now...2 months I reckon

I believe it may be just a advertising gimmic....I was in there last monday and asked him if he was looking forward to retirement...he just smiled and continued on doing what he was doing

lots of liquidation and closing down sales (where prices are up) that never seem to happen in littl'ol Adelaide

    But ...I wonder???

i got the same respose, Christmas time, but they have gotten rid of allot of crap, i walked places were you havent been able to get to for 10 + years, the owner would have to be the grumpiest secondhand machinery dealer i have ever met

They sell the usual array of cheap foreign sourced hardware (casters, tool boxes cutting tools etc) - the sort of thing you see at Paramounts and others. The rest of the yard is filled with used industrial equipment. If you wanted a 24" blower fan or a hammer mill for example, he may possibly have one. However, you can't predict what is there or whether it is complete or even in good nick. I bought my first drill press there many years ago complete with a crack in a cast iron bracket - it was stated at time of sale that the bracket was cracked but at a lot of places it would have been tossed.
It's a yard worth the occasional poke around but not the sort of place where I go when I have a good idea what I am looking for (Machinery Warehouse has a bigger range). The owner won't bargain either.

They are definitely closing down by Christmas, according to the red headed (grumpy) owner.

The older tallish dark haired guy that worked for him retired about a week ago.

The owner has just had enough, decided to call it quits and retire as well.

I asked if Ebay/internet had bitten into his viability, but he said no, just time to do something different.

Redwood are good on some stuff, eg. cheapest sanding belts in South Oz by a country mile.

Also lathe chuck and rotary table prices are quite good.

The owner is OK in my estimation - he just isn't the most talkative bloke I've ever met. He also has a very short bulls%#t tolerance level.

He knows his stuff better than most.

I've been going there a bit lately, some cheap stuff available.

    Black ninja gloves $4
T slot cleaner $1 (and I was going to make one!)

He has a nice free standing surface grinder he was offering for $1600, but I'm a little tight lately, it has a big magnetic chuck on it, very nice.

dont know about that....you cant get to where he has the hercus lathe beds now as its been hidden by stuff.

Where I found the camel back stright edge is also impossible to get to.

he seems to have a lot more newer type items of late

He's still there. I dropped in and found a small jib crane for lifting R/Ts etc. "End of June" was the projected final days.

Yes, he's well past the quoted closing down date.

Maybe he forgot to say WHICH Christmas he would be closing down.

I was in there a few weeks back and it seemed like business as usual.

He's OK, just not a great conversationalist

At least he knows his stuff. I was in Paramounts on Friday and the regular guys were not around and they had two guys hovering over the lathes, and I kid you not, they didn't know the difference between a live and a dead centre - probably selling fridges last week.

    Bit of a worry.
