    Default My Hendey and GMH

I've had one of those moments when the planets line up , a case of serendipity .

My Hendey was used by GMH, so the previous owner said . The Manual that came with it has GMH ink stamps and markings dated 1948 . The other oddity is the French plate on it and being metric .

Hendeyman on the PM forum has informed me that my lathe was manufactured in June 1940 .

Some years ago, I was given a book, the GMH WW2 history, published by GMH them selves in 1946 . The book details what was made and where , its a great book with many pics and data . The book actually mentions that lathes made in the USA that were intended for France were diverted to GMH in Australia after the fall of France ...

BTW I scanned the whole book.. 170 odd pages some years ago

Yes very nice, this brings to mind a post I saw on here in the last month or so (i was overseas looking on my ipad) something about Ford and machine tools?
Where I worked at BHP/AIS Port Kembla there was a fairly big Horizontal Borer made by Ford it had the Ford logo on it, I presume it was made for war time production, there were also a couple of AIS lathes that were made onsite, probably all gone now.

    Will,

Here's a Ford lathe. This appeared in a magazine some years ago - don't remember which one - might hae been Restored Cars.

    Default piccies

    These may be of interest

Major projects undertaken included manufacture of :

    Gypsy aero engine

    Gray marine diesel engine

These projects required the casting of engine blocks , this paved the way for the post war Holden car .

Mike, any Gypsy pics? My Dad restored an Auster which had a Gypsy Major I think it was called. Same donk as a tiger moth. Upside down 4 cyl. Open pipes a few inches long. SO loud.

Looks like a great book. Boy they really made a wide range of stuff. The golden age of manufacturing?

The whole book compiled into a pdf and uploaded somewhere would be nice

There was a Ford lathe on ebay some time back.... Heavy machine with a fairly large spindle bore of 8 or 10 inches from memory... No chuck....

Also have seen a Southern Cross turret lathe, no doubt made in Toowoomba.

    Bryan

Apart from the Gypsy major engine, GMH made components for many other aircraft

Yes it would . It has a copyrite dated 1946 . I have given copies on CD to friends but I'd hate to be sued by GM for uploading it onto the web .

They also made canvas items eg tents , gas masks , gaiters and more . Marine craft for the US army ( reverse lend lease ) not to mention thousands of vehicle bodies . weapons , 2 and 6 pounder anti tank guns , the list goes on

Thanks morrisman, that's a great lot of interesting history there.

Could you give the full title etc of the book.

    Thanks.

    Cheers.

    No problem

Apparently these books were given to GMH employees , not everyone, but certain high ranking officials of the company etc. Each book was individually signed by the owner . The signature on this copy has faded and is hard to fathom. I've seen a few other copies around , but they are not common .

BTW GMH made a colour movie in 1944 , it goes for about 30 mins . I have it on DVD . It was never released as far as I know . No sound track at all. It shows each major plant and stuff being made .... the original is in the South Aust, state archives MIKE
