    Hi Brendon,
There are a few topics over in the welding forum on what welder to buy, might be worth a look as well.

    Default Cigweld 175i

    Hi Brendan,

Have a look at the CIGWELD Transmig 175i Multi Process. It does mig, stick and lift arc tig. You can pick one up for $990.00 and it has a three year warrente only down side is it doesnt have HF and you have to buy the Tig torch seperately.
Here is a link to the specs. http://apac.thermadyne.com/southpaci...dID=1534&brand=

    Not enough information.

What welder you need depends entirely on what you need to weld, in terms of material and thickness.

General rule, never buy any welder that quotes a 10% duty cycle.

thickness will be up to 8mm steel, aluminum that's rite the duty cycle needs to be reasonably high i don't want it over heating on me all the time
was also looking at the weldsmart 135amp mig, stick welder and the 200 amp mig, stick welder what do you think? my price range is some where in near the $700 mark. WeldSmart 135 Amp Mig & MMA GAS &GASLESS Inverter ARC Welder MAG Welding | eBay

I'd probably prefer one of these:

Magnum Mig200 Inverter Mig, Tig, Arc Welder Gas-Gasless | eBay

The reason being that I have their 250 amp model, I've put 12 of the 15kg spools of wire through it plus E309, E316 stainless and it's never given me a moment's problems. I've also used it as a stick welder for stainless and cellulose fluxed rods, lovely arc characteristics.

My personal rule is to look at the 60% duty cycle rating and use that to determine what to get. The 200A unit is therefore really a 160A effective unit which is fine; my old (very) 3 phase MIG is 140A @ 100% duty cycle, about 15% @ 250A. My new single phase 250A Magnum unit is 250A @ 60% duty cycle.

Not that I've used lift arc, but if you have that why would you need HF?

I'd take HF over lift arc any day. I do not want to contaminate my electrode at all and lift arc sometimes (often?) turns into a scratch start.

Tried TIG using my DC welder. Don't like it. Fortunately, thanks to a forum member doing me a big favour, I now have a HF TIG/stick welder to go with my MIG.

You really can't have too many <insert toy of choice here...>.

Thanks for that, if I either bother to buy a tig I'll stay away from it then. I'd love a tig as fusion welding is one of my favorites but I really don't have a need for it and I cant come at renting another bottle . Maybe if that gas company in NSW comes down here.
