Lubrication advice please
Hi
What I am doing is fixing a hot melt glue applicator in a edge bander for a friend.The glue applicator ceased due to lack of lubrication. I would say it's never been lubricated since new, approximately 30 years ago
The shaft comes through the bottom of the glue pot and delivers the glue to the board edge.
There is a cone seal at the top of the bearing housing of metal to metal...see photos. The large diameter of the cone is in contact with the hot glue, and the other half that does not rotate is spring loaded.
It looks to have an oil hole with a ball in it. I have not been able to open it yet.
This whole thing runs hot at around 200c at about 100 rpm and it has no load on it.
I will put new bearings (6005z) in it. The old ones had the seal removed on the inner side of the bearing. The spec on a 6005 is 100c so I guess they removed the standard lube and let the oil that was put in the top drip down???
My question is what lube to use
A; oil or grease?
B; would a heavy engine oil do?
C; should there be a packer in here?
Note.. there was no glue inside the bearing housing... none had got passed the cone seal.

I'd be thinking a high temperature grease. If you used oil then at that temperature I'd expect the viscosity to be down to zip and it would flow through almost straight away. Perhaps phone up either a bearing supplier or a reputable lubricant supplier and have a talk to one of their technical people. Some one must do something similar (turbine bearings for example?)
Perhaps a teflon bush is worth thinking about?

I would say high temperature bearing grease. Contact you local SKF dealer and he will point you in the right direction. When I inquired about grease for the mill he said if I picked the high temperature stuff it would never get hot enough to work properly.

Thank for the inputs
Spoke to skf and taking all thing into account we come up with using a heavy synthetic engine oil with bearings with extra clearance.
The cone seal is working well so no need changing it.
Was thinking of running copper pipe from oil hole to outside of machine and putting a small cup at the seal hight. This can then be top up when level drops.
