    Default power hacksaw motor

    hi all
i have picked up a old power hacksaw not sure of age but its a small industrial machine i think .the problem is it did not come with a electric motor and im not sure what size electric motor it would take to make it usable .
can you go too big ? ie use a 1 hp motor instead if its meant to have a 1/2 hp motor
    any help appreciated.

    Hi Dean,
Got a picture? someone here could likely tell you want motor you need.
Yes you could go to big, then you might break something before the motor stops.

A picture would help as someone here might have the same machine and be able to tell you exactly what motor it needs. I think mine has a 3hp, but would have to check.

Good score, you got it for $30 less than mine and I thought that was a great price from Bollie on here, but I got a motor with mine, (even though it is 3 ph and I need to change it,LOL)

I have had a bandsaw for years but am only new to hacksaws myself and haven't even got mine going yet, but there are a fair few guys here that have them and have had them for years. I am not sure if there are any blades left, but in my thread I linked above you will find the companies name for cheap blades.

As for motor size, around the HP is usually good enough, it's the motor speed you will have to watch as they come in 1400 odd and 2800 rpm styles.

Your pictures will help to work out what size/rpm motor you need, look forward to them.

If it's smaller it probably had a smaller motor. I have seen some home made from angle iron etc.

They don't bring big money now days, but save a lot of work cutting steel instead of the old hand hacksaw,LOL

With your trip it sounds familiar, we went off to garage sales one day and I was chasing a worm and gear box at the time. I ended up bored as they all seemed to have girly stuff or baby stuff. We pulled up at one place and I walked in said hello to a fellow and then was walking out past my wife and I said nothing here for me. With that the guy over heard and said what are you after, to which my wife replied he is after some worm and gear box. He replied I have a couple under the house I will go dig them out, so I bought the 2 for $40. Could not believe my luck, LOL

I have a smaller hacksaw. Will try and remember to check the motor tomorrow. Looks about 1/2 hp. They are heavily geared so shouldn't need a big motor.

I decommissioned my 40 year old home-made 12" blade power hacksaw about 6 or 7 years ago (when I got my second-hand Rong Fu 6x4 bandsaw). It had a 1/3HP motor that was unstopable.

So you might get away with something small like a washing machine motor or something similar by the sounds of it, but don't take your wifes washing machine motor as we don't want her on here joining up and blaming us for leading you astray, LOL

    Hi mid life crisis,
I just bought a Power Hacksaw from a friend for $50.00, its an Australian built Stewart Model. It has a 1/3 HP Single Phase Motor and test cut a 60mm round bar which it did with ease, I have a number of spare motors so will probably put a 1 HP Motor on it.
Depending on the size of your unit a 1/2 or 1 HP Motor would do the job, if you can get a sealed type motor as you dont want Cutting Fluid or Swarf getting into the Motor.

    Regards,
    Keith.
