I only got one picture of the mill. It is supposed to be a Taiwanese machine from 1978. Can anybody identify the machine?

You will notice amongst the accessories is a Myford indexing attachment with two plates.

Unfortunately the previous owner has had some sort of mishap and machined the centre T- Slot wider for quite a large portion of its length. I will try and get some more photos of this, hopefully some of you will have ideas on how this could be fixed.

Also the machine is 3 phase, I should have got a picture of the motor plate too. I am going to need a VFD anybody have any suggestions on a brand and supplier ?

    Regards

Those are good little mills, I picked one up for a friend of mine some years back. He's been very happy with it. I have a small horizontal mill with the same size table, a very useful machine.

His was also 3 phase and the motors were easy to jumper over to 240V - 2 motors as he had power feed also. He used 2 of the single phase 240V-3 phase 240V VFD units.

As long as the T slot can hold well, I'd forget about it. You cannot restore it to original condition no matter what you do, so go with function.

    PDW,

It is great to know that the motors are easy to wire for 240V VFDs

I think possibly you are right and I may have to go for function. But maybe someone on this forum might come up with a brilliant fix which is trivially implemented.

BTW I think the T-slots may have been taken out to 3/4" attached is a photo that I scaled that dimension of using the fact that the table is supposed to be 205mm wide.

The tee slots on my machine are 14mm .
I have a parts manual from a similar mill , shows a (not very good ) schematic of the parts , but it gives some idea .
I have attached it ,and a Grizzly manual also , similar machine.
My machine has no markings at all , but you can see where one was fitted at one time.

I have a mill which looks the same but has McMillan branded on it. Actually it is my sons but he uses my shed and I use his machines.
Will try to find out more and post a pic.

    HI,
Guys I've just realised I have made a BOO BOO. Where I had said that I had seen one of these Mills Branded Mcpherson it is Wrong. What I should have said it that I have seen one of these Mills Branded 'Mcmillan'. The Posting by robbo37 has made Me realise My mistake -Sorry Guys.

One another Note could the Guys that have these Mills Please tell Me what sizes their Belts are Motor & Spindle ?. The Herless SM-1 that My Boss has, has got the wrong length Belts on it cause we can't Change Speeds properly.
    Thanks Guys.

Mine needs a head rebuild , the bearings are a bit noisy ,but it's a job that will get done one day. I fitted a power feed to mine for x y feed.

Just noticed in this pic it has the Myford dividing attachment set up on the table . I use the Myford lathe milling slide to mount the attachment to the table .

    Kev,

I just noticed your stand. I like the fact you can move your machine around while still having the ability to lock it in place.

I visited my mill again today, It made me realise how short it is, so I definitely need something to raise it to a reasonable height and a stand like yours would be just the ticket.

    Thanks for providing the inspiration

I am resurrecting this thread because I have finally put a VFD on this mill and surveyed the T slots. I have come to the conclusion they where originally milled out of parallel with the ways by about 2mm over the length of the table. The previous owner then milled a ~450mm portion of the top part of centre slot parallel with the ways and leaving very little lip to grip with a T nut in to sections.

Ideally I would like the T slots somewhat parallel with the ways all the same size and functional. In theory this should mean taking no more than 1mm deep cuts from any part of the T slots and then some custom nuts.

Also in theory it might also be possible to do this on the machine by swiveling the head around to reach all of the table. In practice I have gratefully accepted an offer by Michael G to fix them.

    Kev,

It has been a while but I noticed that you said you fitted power feed to your X & Y axis. Can you provide any details on how?

    Default The conclusion.

After 7 years of sitting around being a boat anchor I finally have a milling machine. I give most of the credit to Michael G who made me a set of leads crew nuts that has resulted in 0.15mm backlash (down from the 1.4mm backlash I had in both screws) and for a fantastic fix of the major stumbling block which was fixing the T-slots on this machine.

So here are the two nuts that Michael G made IMG_20190610_141327.jpg

The problem with the T slots turned out to be that in manufacture they ran out by 2mm in the Y axis in the length of the table. Left alone this would have been useable except the previous owner had decided to straighten up the middle portion of the centre slot but only did so with the top of the slot and not the bottom of the slot meaning that there was only a 2mm or so ledge for any T nut to grip on at parts of the T-slot.

Pictures showing the effect of this are IMG_20190506_182627.jpg and more closely here IMG_20190418_114200.jpgand hereIMG_20190418_150507.jpg

And after Michael straightened out the slots IMG_20190610_164350.jpg.

And as proof it is no longer a boat anchor here making its first part for my use (I machined a flat on a cast iron part for my father first) IMG_20190620_142322.jpg and the part actually worked out its the clevis on the end of the cylinder rod IMG_20190620_170504-1.jpg.

So after a lengthy gestation thanks mainly to Michael G I have an operational milling machine.

Excellent. You will find many uses for the Mill. If your finances have recovered, get a DRO for it. You will never have to worry about backlash again.
