Thread: What did you learn today?

Though I’d take a quick break by parking my butt on a 20L solvent drum for a couple of minutes....

Been pretty warm today and after sitting there for a minute or so I noticed that the drum felt quite cool.

Then felt that something just wasn’t quite right, so I got up.

Full drum of solvent and with my butt sat on it the liquid had come out the top and I was sitting in it

No worries - just a bit of solvent - should dry off pretty quickly in the heat.
Then the burning started!

A quick run through the shower has settled it down.

No more sitting on full drums for me!!!

Good job it wasn't anything too nasty !

It just shows the unseen hazards lurking in the workshop.

It was actually wax and grease remover - thankfully I don’t use either of those around my nether regions...

All jokes aside - BaronJ is right and I’m lucky it wasn’t anything nasty. A drum of paint stripper would have definitely been an unforgettable experience!

You can buy “pairs” of LH welding gloves - ie 2x LH gloves instead of one left and one right.

I’m guessing I’m not the only one that always wears out the left glove first.

I picked up some from Totaltools today. Around $12 for the “pair”

I'm on my second pair of lefties.
For short welds I usually don't wear a right hand glove at all, and if I wear a right hand glove I usually wear a TIG glove as it provides better feel than standard welding noes.

I also used to use a TIG glove on my right hand, but kept on forgetting it was only a TIG one and picking up something hot with it.

Now for short welds on the bench etc like you I usually don’t bother with the right glove at all - but use a normal one when I do.
Got caught out a beauty last night though when a spatter ball landed between my fingers and stuck there.

Ouch !

Back in early Dec I ordered a 10000 lumen LED panel for $14 from Aliexpress.
It arrived in early Jan but we were away and only just got back and yesterday I had a play around with it.

Over in the WW forum I have posted pics and detail some tests on the panel andalso compare it to the 4 x 2500 lumen LED globe lighting setup I have above my electronics bench.

Price and postage was a princely sum of $14 !
I just checked the price again and note it is now $13 - probably due to the rise in the AUD$.

This is not much good for us left handers. I find it is always the right glove that I wear out.
I have never done a thorough check, but I have never seen those heavier gloves for the right hand.

Easy - just team up with a right hander and buy 2 pairs of gloves. Keep the rights for you, give him the lefts

Did a check on ebay and picked up a few for $7 each. They are perfect for what i want, thanks

Those ones ( like mine are 100W) are $21 on ebay. The 50W versions are $9. They look absolutely Identical to the one I bought.

I've had no trouble with Ali Express. Last year I place about 20 orders with them and even through the height of the COVID lockdown they all arrived on time. I also placed about 50+ orders with ebay, about a dozen items turned up later than the claimed shipping time and 3 things did not turn up at all but they were all replaced.

The seller must have entered the price wrong as they cancelled the order saying there was a problem with my shipping address, lot of BS that.
The problem with aliexpress is when u snag a deadbeat seller. Aliexpress ALWAYS side with the seller. In my case the seller sent the very wrong item and admitted in messages that he was out of stock so he sent the other item hoping it would be ok. Aliexpress reviewed that and decided i had nothing to support my claim so i was out over $100. Ebay always supports the buyer even when it is obvious the buyer is trying to scam the seller.

I bought 2 of these a few months ago - the earth wires weren't connected to anything, just stuffed behind the board the LEDs were mounted to. Be careful!
