Thread: Magnabend hinges

Just bumping this old thread to...
1) ask, again, if anyone has successfully built their own magnabend?
2) a more specific question - what is the diameter of the circular hinge - just trying to get an idea of scale.
I did shop around for one, but even the small 650 size is $4k. I think the base and electrics is doable, but I think the hinges is what makes it a standout machine.
I've looked at the patents, and the cylindrical hinge style looks a little easier to make.

Yes, that's been mentioned a couple of times on this site.
There's an ad online selling magnabend hinges as spare parts for $435 each. That's what I was planning on spending on my build (excluding the cost of bits from the scrap bin).

That's probably because the photos are from nearly 5 years ago, I don't think they stay on line for that long. I could be wrong, I'm always told I am.

Mostly plain sailing but one or two parts that would require some less common techniques. I can't see why the warnings against hobbyists would be needed though. You can either do it or not...

The part called "sector block" and the mating surface on "hinge plate" are spherical surfaces - which for a hobbyist like me is too much. But the original patent shows alternate designs (http://aaybee.com.au/Magnabend/45134...d_articles.pdf). I've CADed and 3d printed a version of Fig 19a. Just need to move it to the top of my project stack and machine one out of metal.

I recently acquired an early model magnabend built in Western Australia during the 80s. It has the alternate hinge design.
It seems you to use them in opposing pairs though as in this photo. But definitely no spherical surfaces.
