    Default Thanks for your help

Hi Phil thanks for that! bit by bit it’s starting to come together in my head! I was never the sharpest tool in the shed.

Thank you Michael for you detailed and informed reply on the parting tool I found it most helpful.

Default Rear tool post on C4 lathe

    Hi Slhouette
What I tried to get my tongue around was by swapping the drive gears as in the post, I put in to you on 24th January this year in (the hypertext ) reverses the rotation of the chuck. I have never tried this idea out so if you have by now you are in a better position to tell me about the outcome of it, maybe after doing this it alters the rotations of the lead screw when you push the button to reverse it. Hope I have explained things better this time

Secondly I must apologise for not letting you know what I thought of the Sieg C4 up to date I have found it to be very accurate and the speed control works well I had to clean the machine up to get rid of all that red grease and there was red paint everywhere that’s all done now.
There were some bad points with the company Carbe Tec in Sydney the manager himself said that they know nothing about metal turning lathe. I also bought a bench to suit the C4 half the screws were missing I contacted them but they never sent out the screws. If I had a warranty issue I believe I would be up the creek without a paddle dealing with Sydney. There is no one there with any knowledge of the Sieg metal lathes I now deal with Brisbane Store.
I also had a face plate which required extra fittings so it would come out further than the micro switch on the guard over the chuck that was fixed through Brisbane.
When I purchased the lathe I also bought a quick change tool post with three tool holders a boring parting and standard holder you really require at least four to six of these standard tool holders. I am having trouble buying them so I will have a go at making them I have a milling machine HM46 but would have to get a dove tale cutter for this job The Parting tools holder will not hold a ½ inch parting blade I have to shim it up to hold so far that’s about it overall the machine works quite well and is very accurate. Stay in touch with your outcomes of the C4 you can PM me

    Hi Colbra,

Yes, by changing the gears in the link you change the direction of the lead screw not the spindle and chuck.

Spindle speed and direction is done via electronics, all the change gears do is provide drive to the lead screw for screw cutting and power feed. By placing gear A directly on the spindle drive (as in the link) you reverse the direction of the gear train and lead screw.

In normal operation when you are using power feed the carriage moves from right to left. Reversed it moves from left to right but the chuck still rotates forward.

I had similar issues with carba tec in Melbourne, they directed me to WA but they're a franchise so you have to pay for shipping. If you want something brought down from Brisbane it's free but WA and Sydney you gotta pay. I have no doubt you'd get your warranty issues sorted, might just take longer.

I found a few things wrong with the lathe but nothing major, i'll try to add another post when I can write a proper one.

Anyway I hope that explains it a bit better.

    Brett
