    Default QCTP holder storage

    Hi fellas.

I changed the toolpost on my H&F AL320-G to a BXA a little while ago and have been looking at storage options for the tool holders.

There's a couple of sellers on eBay that offer holders that have a corresponding dovetail. They're a bit pricey for what they are (in my opinion anyway) and I was looking for an alternative. I was thinking of simply copying the same idea and making my own. Anyway, I was going through Bunnings looking for ideas when I came across these steel wardrobe rails.

I've mounted the rails, with a piece of 20 x 3 aluminium behind, on an old monitor stand base. This creates a perfect profile to hang the dovetails on. The advantage is they just lift off, but have enough meat over the lip as to not be in danger of falling off.

The base is about 400mm square and as you can see by the photos I should be able to accommodate up to 15 holders on it. All I need to do now is mount it on the wall next to my lathe. Personally I like this way of storing them better than the dovetail idea.

    Hope someone finds this useful.

    Regards,
    Wayne

Mine are Dickson style, but that is a neat idea for the BXA tool holders. It would also keep the dust off better than the other ones.

    HI,
That is a Good Idea. I have a BXA on My AL-960B. I have seen the Dovetail ones on Ebay, but haven't bought any as yet. I just had a thought though perhaps some Magnetic Strips might work ok. The downside to the Magnetic Strips though is they might collect to much swarf.

    Hi Stewart,

Apart from the swarf collection problem of magnetic strips I don't think they'd be powerful enough to hold them, particularly the boring bar holder. The risk of dislodging one while removing another would be high as well.

Would make a nice mess of your carbide tips if they hit the floor, not to mention your foot if you're wearing the standard aussie shed safety footwear (a pair of rubber thongs )

    Cheers,
    Wayne

I suppose you could always use a couple of neodymium jobs for each holder. Just set them in epoxy so you can wipe any swarf off.

You would have to watch you didn't magnetize the holders from being on them for so long, other wise your swarf would be jumping on the tool post, LOL

That's a nice bit of lateral thinking Wayne. There was a lathe tooling thread a short time back
    http://www.woodworkforums.com/f65/sh...ayouts-135353/
which had a few other ideas too.

    HI,
Good Point Dave, put that Dumb Idea that I had in the Bin Guys. I for one certainly don't want to end up with Magnetised Tool Holders and I don't think anyone else would either.
