Good measuring equipment supplier
Hello Everyone,
This is my first post here. Just been cruising through the forum and there is some great info here!
Anyway, I have an AL960B lathe at home that I enjoy mucking around on.
I am want to set myself up with some good measuring equipment. I am after a dial test indicator and 100mm base depth mic. Starrett or Mitutoyo will be the go I reckon
If anyone can put me onto someone locally or internationally it would be great!
Also, has anyone used the Measuremax brand gear? Just after a few opinions.
Cheers!
Anthony

I have got a measuremax digital 8" caliper... It is better quality then the cheap stuff, not as good as say Tesa..
I would say it is middle of the road quality...Gold, the colour of choice for the discerning person.

It's worth having a poke around here: 027 : Long Island Indicator Service : Sales, Repairs and Spare Parts,
and especially here: 037 : Dial Test Indicators.

I am hesitant on buying second hand measuring equipment off ebay... Early on I got a couple of items that looked good, but were not...

Thanks for the replies so far fellas!
Has anyone bought from the long island indicator mob? I am looking at some of the Swiss indicators (Bestest and Interapid). Anything that is Swiss made that I have come across is usually excellent quality. I don't mind buying good gear as I only want to buy it once. Has anyone got any of the mentioned gear?

I have an Interapid indicator that I like just fine. Tesa, Brown and Sharpe are very good too. All of my mics are Tesa, replaced the Starretts I used to own. Mitutoyo are probably the best non-Swiss measuring tools out there, and probably the best value (if you buy them offshore)
To round the discussion out, I own Etalon mics in inch sizes which are also Swiss and pretty high quality. And some ex-USSR thread mics which I find oddly good.
Carl Mahr makes some very nice indicators too, although in a funky retro looking case.
Most of my stuff came from ebay, including those things that I bought new. Long Island Indicator has great prices on Mitutoyo digital callipers. A local friend here sent a Compac indicator to them for repair and he was well pleased.
Old school stuff on ebay: Starrett, Lufkin, B & S in inch are all good things. Scherr-Tumico sold an awful lot of metric depth mics to the US military which pop up often on US ebay. Mine came new, unopened by the US taxpayer for $10 for the set. It's all part of the service here at The House of Pain™

HI,
Welcome to the Forum Wilson85. I have a Mitutoyo 150mm Depth Micrometer and a Imperial Mitutoyo Dial Indicator both of which I am very Happy with. The Dial Indicator I bought New and the Depth Mic I bought Second Hand on Ebay from an Ex Toolmaker. I just did a quick Google and came up with an Australian Seller here is the Link Cutting tools, measuring equipment, machine tools, and abrasives specialists Asteg Engineering Victoria and South Australia :: About Asteg Engineering . Here is another Aussie Seller only Second Hand stuff I think Tool Exchange - Starrett Tools and His Ebay Store thetoolexchangeoz items - Get great deals on Stanley Spare Parts, Stanley Planes items on eBay Stores! I have never Bought from either of them.
If You choose to Buy Second Hand Measuring Equipment off Ebay I suggest You try and Buy from a Reputable Seller ie Someone that has Good Feedback and perhaps offers a Return.
I too have a AL-960B, there must be quite a lot of Members on the Forum now that have these Lathes. All The Best steran50 Stewart

I tried to get a Mitutoyo Digimatic caliper from Long Islant & Amazon in November, they are a banned export. Got a 500-196-20 from RS Components for $225, $160 cheaper than their opposition.

I've ordered a couple Mitutoyo dial indicators from Amazon from the US and had them delivered to Australia no problem.
However when I contacted Mitutoyo USA directly they wouldn't answer my questions because I wasn't a USA resident even though I was sourcing from the US.
Regards, Christian
BTW: I find Amazon also pretty good for O1 tool steel and brass rod.
