Default Shapers Here are some of mine

    Hi Guys,
First post so I hope I don't screw it up...

I'm a dyed in the wool "Shaper Nut"...loved them and used them for over 40 years...

So, I couldn't pass up this thread on Shapers...

Here are a couple of photos...of my: Elliott 10M (circa 1969), Elliott 14M (circa 1963) and my late model Gate/Elliott 14M (1985) with the swivel table...

Lurking further back in the "shed" is an 8" Boxford (circa 1962)...

I have also just secured a Invicta/Elliott Model 2 Vertical Slotting Attachment (to fit the 14 inch Elliott's)...but it won't be home 'til next weekend...after a 700 mile round trip, by my mate, to pick it up for me.

I have been actually looking for one of these Vertical Slotting Attachments for over three years now...and was starting to give up hope!
...Still hasn't sunk in that I have finally got my grubby little hands on one...

    Hope you like the pics...

    Regards,
    Neebs

Very nice, and cant wait to see the vertical head. Maybe you can let out how they attach to the shaper and work, as I have never found an online reference. Most UK shops are small and would only have room for one shaper and that's it, so you must have some room there.

Shaper haven on PM from the US is up to 22 shapers I think it is, are you going to keep going to keep the world balanced, LOL

    Dave

    PS
I hope to have my third shaper here this year, it's another 24 inch shaper with all the bells and whistles.

    Default Thanks for the welcome

    Hi Guys,
Thanks for your enthusiastic welcome and cheers to : "Bob" (Anorak), Bruce, "Log", Robbo 37, Dave "J" and Ray "G"...

I will try and answer most of your points in this post...
Bruce..."Pretty keen" on Shapers is an understatement...I am absolutely obsessed with Shapers!...I see them as the "forgotten friend" of the Home Engineer...and when you consider the versatility and flexibility afforded by a "shaper" (about the only thing you can't do on a Shaper is: Drill Holes!)...allied with the fact that it is low-cost tooling...I just cannot fathom why the "penny hasn't dropped"...with more of the "men in sheds" brigade.

"Log"...well spotted that man...yes that's the beasty!...sitting on the pallet next to the Shaper.

"Robbo 37"...thanks for your mention of the "Kingdom of Fife"...appreciated!

Dave "J"...I would love to keep the world "balanced" by bringing home more Shapers...unfortunately, I can't get anymore in!!!
...and just a few weeks ago, I had to pass-up on an Invicta 24 inch complete with original vice...as I just couldn't squeeze any more into the shed...damn!!!

Ray "G"...you and a few other guys have asked for more info on the Vertical Slotting attachment...
Well, here is a scan from the Invicta Sales "flyer"...enjoy.
...and Ray...just for you...here is a picture of the Elliott Shaper Vice

To all...I will keep you posted of progress with the refurbishment and installation of the Vertical Slotting Attachment as it unfolds...
I will have to make an Operating Link/Crank to drive this attachment...as it was "missing" from the one I have secured.

These things are so rare...I am actually currently "conversing" with a Scotsman, in Bermuda, to measure up the Operating Crank from his...and send me the info...

It is times like this that you really start to appreciate the value of the Internet...

    Regards,
    Neebs

P.S. Happy to upload other pics or close-ups of the Shapers if interested.

Do you have a sketch or a picture of how it actually connects to the shaper? I would be interested in what ever photos you put up.

Default Operating link for Invicta/Elliott Vertical Slotter Attachment

    Hi Guys,
Right then...for Dave "J" and Anorak Bob I will attach a couple of photos of the Operating crank/link which drives the Attachment from the drive-pin on the Shaper Bull Gear/Stroke Changer slide. (these pics were supplied to me by a guy in Tennessee)...so you can see we are going right around the world for the info!

I also suggest you look again at the scans/pics of the Vertical Slotter Attachment Sales Flyer...to get an idea of how the Vertical Attachment sits on the Shaper main casting.

To fit the attachment: you have to lift off the existing Horizontal Shaper Ram and then lift out the Rocking Lever and the corresponding sliding die Block. Then you "lift" the Vertical Slotting Attachment into position to (in effect) replace the Horizontal Shaper Ram (again...see the pic from the Vert. Slot. Attach. Sales Flyer). It is then LOCKED in place by tightening up the Gib Strip from the (removed) Shaper Ram. You then fit the Operating crank/link by slipping the lower bushed end onto the exposed Shaper Bull Gear/Sroke changer slide driving pin while guiding the Operating crank up through the open center of the attachment to attach the top of the crank/link to the lug on the back of the Vertical Sliding Ram.
This then allows the rotary motion of the driving pin on the Bull Gear assembly to be converted to a vertical motion for the Slotter Ram...simples!!!

You have now changed the machine from a 3hp 14 inch stroke conventional Shaper...to a 3hp 9.5 inch stroke Vertical Slotter...(within the same floor "footprint").

This all "sounds" a lot more complicated than it actually is...hopefully the photos will add the clarity that my "words" don't.

    Regards,
    Neebs

P.S. The last picture is not one of my machine...it is the machine referred to: in Log's post...a few posts back...via his link to Practical Machinist.
