All looking very neat and tidy Ray.
The original switches on the old Waldowns appeal to me but you'll be looking at things from an electical engineer's perspective, not one clouded by the romance of yesteryear.
Here's the garden shed drill switch apart and a shot of the lovely old fashioned 3M switch. Also included in the photos is the small switch I added to the Tough, deleted from my previous post.
Then at the extreme opposite to my restrained switches, there are the enclosures you see on the pair of drills in the background in the final photo. To be fair, they will contain contactors but do they really need to be the size of a six can esky?

Hi BT,
I'm partial to the older style too. I like the old clipsal bakelite one, I assume that's original?
I finished the sanding and got my first look at the colour.. looks a pretty fair match to the Waldown colour as far as I can tell.
Here are the new backyard wind chimes
I got the paint place to colour match to the inside of the belt cover.. It's a 2 pack acrylic, so I'll be interested to see how well it goes for chipping and such.
Almost ready to start reversing the process and assembling..
Regards
Ray

From here the colour looks spot on. Very impressive Ray.
The enamel I used took about a week to dry. Not good when you are impatient.
The little Clipsal switch is the original as fitted by Waldown.
Hold your fingers around the nose of your pop riveter when refixing the name plate to the belt guard. It will prevent the nose jerking against the new paint. Also, watch the shims while reassembling the spindle. They are extremely fragile.

That all looks bloody beautiful Ray!
Well done. Can't wait to see it back together - and eventually in the flesh.

That's nice work Ray. Attached is a photo of the switch from my 2M. The style of switch seems to vary quite a lot. If I were starting from scratch I'd probably go for the push type though.

If you want the Bakelite style though I have this one that I took off a machine some time ago. It's a 3 phase unit but could of course do single phase. Size is 60mm by 90mm

Hi Ray, are you using spraygun or rattle can? The paint job looks very professional. Did you use etch primer as well?

Looking beautiful Ray.
When I re-bearinged mine I couldn't get the narrow size fitted to (I think) the top of the spindle. Maybe it was the bottom. Rather than chase a rare size I bought a standard bearing and turned the spindle to suit. It was just trimming a length. Possibly sacrilegious but it worked and will be easy to replace again. Yours may differ of course. Bob may be able to fill us in a bit more.

Thanks BT, if mine comes out half as good as your restoration, I'll be more than happy.
Joe, when you come over for a christmas/new year drop, I should be well on the way to getting it all re-assembled. I've got some Waldown paint left over, wonder what that would look like on the Servian?
Thanks Michael for the switch offer, I don't think the 3 phase one will fit in the casting, but thanks anyway I appreciate the offer.
Jackeroo, I've taken a liking to the spray cans of galmet primer, so all the inital prep was galmet primer after getting everything back to bare metal. I also used rattle cans of spray putty, till that ran out, and finally switched to the spray gun with 3M spray putty for the last few coats, then final coat was spraygun, with Salcomix 2 part acrylic.
I did two coats, and just after washing out the gun, with the 2 pack you only get 2 hours pot life, ... it was only then that I noticed a bit I missed (on both coats) right in the middle at the front of the head... doh!... I've got to mix up another batch anyway to paint the new table locking ring, the old one was cracked and I've made a pattern to cast a new one, but haven't cast it yet.

Hi Bryan,
The bottom spindle bearing has three bearings, the top and bottom one were ex-stock Nachi 6003ZE at the local bearing place, but the middle thrust bearing is a Hoffman XLM18, which kind of had them shaking their heads, They said they would chase it up in the new year, so we will see what they come up with. I won't be too fussed however the original is still in reasonable condition (the only one that is!) The top spline bearings are a pair of EE-8 deep groove, I haven't got them yet.
Regards

Just a couple of "in progress" pictures, haven't been able to do much on it for a couple of days with family commitments and a trip up the NSW south coast (no fishing either)..
So I was sort of keen to see what it was going to come up like.. and put a few bits back together..
I've still got to chase up some bearings before I can do the head properly, so this is just a temporary assembly.
You can see the bit at the front where I missed painting, on both coats! It was hanging upside down when I did the spray painting... so another coat is in order..
Regards

Mine's heading back into the garden shed.
Looking very crisp Ray.
Here is my experience with the single direction thrust bearing. I purchased a new bearing from Statewide Bearings. Using NSK-RHP bearing terminology the bearing comprises a shaft washer, a housing washer, balls and cage. The photos below show an old bearing from the spindle that Ray intends using in Blue Beauty and the new bearing. The bearing cannot be used because the housing washer internal and external diameters match those of the quill bore (35mm) and the spindle diameter (17mm). Fitted, it will not rotate. Hence my reinstallation of the original bearing.
I cannot find any reference to the AS marking on the new bearing or the 006 on the box.
I wonder if the bearing was modified by Waldown.
