Default My first contribution....simple tool holder

This is my first post here and I hope I am going about it the right way?

    Real simple tool holder...
Having come to the conclusion that HSS will be the turning tool of choice from now on I needed to get some tool holders, so, nothing to do but make a couple of them...
Start with a bit of steel, nothing special just mild steel rectangular....

The mill vice was set to about 6 degrees...

    IMGP9404 by aardvark_akubra, on Flickr

Now I thought this was a good idea, two very strong magnets holding the workpiece flush with the top of the vice jaws...

    IMGP9403 by aardvark_akubra, on Flickr
.............well, it seemed to be a good idea at the time.

I started milling a slot using a two flute milling tool and a dribble of cutting fluid....

    IMGP9405 by aardvark_akubra, on Flickr
..............you can see the problem already, the chips are magnetic and dont want to be brushed aside! Oh dear!

Slot cut and a bit of a tidy up of the metal..

    IMGP9409 by aardvark_akubra, on Flickr
..... the tool is a slide fit in the slot.

A bit of precision work with the aptly named hack saw...

Some cold blue makes it look somewhat presentable...

    IMGP9413 by aardvark_akubra, on Flickr

    And it works a treat.....

    IMGP9412 by aardvark_akubra, on Flickr

..... the tool post clamp puts enough pressure on to close the saw cut a little and grip the tool.
I am so pleased I think I will make another one..

John, welcome from across the ditch. I've made some similar holders, but didn't rake them, and wasn't smart enough to take the slit right through. I thought I needed a hinge. Seeing yours I realise that's silly, and it just made the tolerance on the tool slot needlessly tight.

I'm very lazy when it comes to grinding tool angles

    Nice job John and welcome.

    Do you have a demagnetizer?

Hi, thanks for the comments everyone.

Yes Stuart I do have a demagnetizer, it is from an old main frame tape eraser and works quite well.

    Hi John,
Good to see you over here and posting your tool holder up,
Now you need to and show everyone that little lathe stand of yours.

Hi Dave, but first I need to find a less clunky way of showing pictures...

Hi Pete, do you mean the box bike or the Douglas? I took the box bike for a ride today out to the airport museum and it was a real slog getting it home against one of our famous nor'westers.

The Douglas has been offered for sale, even had a ken buyer in the UK but that fell through when he found he would have to pay VAT on it. Maybe for the best as the ship it would have likely be on is now lying on a reef off NZ.

Hi John yes the box bike Maybe time to motorise it I'm thinking of building this [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mwh2hYEJUCs]Home Built Recumbent Trike. Detailed plans and construction Steps. - YouTube[/ame] and maybe addind a Z-Box motor or electric using the electric motor from an old gofer I have been given.
Lucky for the guy not going ahead then the chances of him getting it would have been a worry

Hi Pete, I have thought of motorising it using a Fisher and Paykel washing machine motor as I have a box of those. Maybe do something quaint like a pusher trailer...
