    Default Sanity check on selecting a lathe

    Hey everyone,

    Some of you may remember a couple of threads from me over the last few months trying to decide on which lathe to buy.

    Unless someone convinces me otherwise I am going to get a AL-336 from H&F during the sale next week. I would like the AL-336D but will wait and see the price.

    I am limiting myself to machines that I can walk in and touch, which in Brisbane is quite a restriction. I will be using it for model engineering.

    Anyone got any good or bad experiences with this lathe please?

    I got the catalog yesterday and the 335 is on special for $2860 inc gst and the 336 is $3179 or $3949 with DRO, QCTP and lead screw covers. It also has Low stock orders taken at sale price, so if you want one get in now.

    Hi Dennis
    I don't know if this helps or not but I bought a H&F AL 340D and find it close to perfect for both fine work and larger. A couple of things to look out for is, the leadscrew cover had to go as it wouldn't allow machining close to the chuck. Also the faceplate won't fit unless the chuck guard mount is removed. Another small thing is the DRO scale mounted on the cross slide stops the tailstock from getting as near to the chuck as it could. Removing the leadscrew cover helps. I don't know if the smaller lathes have the same problems but could be worth checking. Make sure it comes with the DRO. You won't regret it.

    I know you're in Brisbane but it seems H&F Sydney have second hand stock of the lathe i bought about 4 months ago, a Victor 400x750. https://www.machineryhouse.com.au/XLA120

    Might be worth a look? The ones in the photo do look filthy though

    They are a great lathe and have a lot going for them.

    Made in Taiwan, super rigid, triple spindle bearings, 3.75/7.5hp 2 speed motor, 30-1800rpm, 1 piece cast base, wide ways. They weigh about 1400kg or 1500kg.

    I had to fit a DRO to mine and it was pretty easy, around 3 hours to install it from the get go.
