    Default reamers

what do you guys think about reamers as my local tool shop has a set of reamers they got from china for $150 this consists of sizes 6-20 mm but the tolerances are a mix of h7 and h8 whatever that means.

If they are sharp and the grinding is good then $150 sounds cheap for a set, If they perform properly they should make drilling and boring to common sizes easier and quicker

Not sure what you mean by tolerances H7 H8 could refer to the steel and it doesnt make sense to mix tools made to different tolerances

i thought spiral flute reamer's were machine reamers and straight flute reamers are for hand use.

i would be using them to ream pin hole and model engine cylinders so mostly aluminium and brass but also quite a bit of steel.

Hi guys the H7 H8 and so on are the tolerance to the size. As for the reamers the tapper reamers are hand reamers and the straight ones are machine most of the time.

So what tolerances are the h7 and h8 tools expected to hold under proper use?

It depends on the hole size, but for example using a 6mm to 10mm hole. H8= +.022mm -0.0mm. H7=+0.015mm -0.0mm
Assuming of course I havent gone crossed reading the tables

    Hi Patrick,

As Stuart said... if you have a copy of Machinery's Handbook, or (better) The black book, look it up under "Limits and Fits", H8 is classed as close running fit, and H7 is classed as sliding fit.

My black books at work but I know the table you are referring to,...... Personally I would not get them but maybe go for a good adjustable set........ still $150 sounds like a good price if those fits are what you are after
