Nice Job I guy in I know in Melbourne who also has a CVA, I thought his was a Monarch EE at first sight. No comparison between the CVA and the HF machines which are all spindle speed challenged and a little flimsy in the sub $10K models. The 10EE motor is good the thyratron speed controller is as antiquated as a valve television Not difficult to replace it with a modern controller though some EE owners would consider that sacrilege.

Yes, couldn't see anyway around the supply issue. While you can get 20 and even 30 Amp single phase supplies in Aus that would give the power required, the problem then becomes finding a VFD that will turn that into 3 phase. I read that you can supply single phase to 3 phase in VFDs but that you have to derate them quite a lot, so potentially I could have needed say a 10kW unit, and they are industrial units so would not be cheap either.

    Nice lathe Michael. Tasteful restoration.

I have only seen one of the older Monarch-esque CVAs. A thing of beauty. I used to think squared off was less appealing than curvaceous but notions can change when viewing something first hand. Quality comes to the fore, often eclipsing preconceived ideas about shape.
