workshop draws for nuts bolts and small tools
Hi guys,
Im after some workshop draws...the sort that sit on your bench or on a shelf with all your nuts and bolts etc in them...and some small tools like punches, lathe tools, milling cutters etc. I have been googling a bit but arent having much luck...does anyone know of a good palce to buy this stuff? Do they have them in the big green shed? Id prefer metal over plastic if possible.

I just bought one of those $500 1 meter long tool boxes from super cheap to put some lathe and mill stuff in.
The US seems to be flooded with the draw units, but they would either cost a fortune down here, or cost a fortune to post them from the US.
Even the import ones from H&F's are expensive.

Hi, try a search on eBay for tool cabinet. Here is example of what you maybe after
MAXIM 9Drawer Tool Chest Cabinet Toolbox box Storage | eBay
or these at H&F
Tooling Cabinets | machineryhouse.com.au
I mostly use large plastic cases with removable dividers (@ $15 ea) for larger items and also smaller divided plastic cases with 6-12 compartments per case (@ about $5 ea) for smaller stuff and keep them in several large roller drawer units that I have. These cases are available at available at B's as well as other places like bargain basement stores. He Who Dies With the Most Tools Wins

grand sale
You might get lucky if you peruse the clearing sales in your area . Junk/scrap yards. Garage sales etc. Or a business closing down . Op shops. I picked up two ex-bank metal 4 draw filing cabinets for $45 each at a op shop.
Another option is to recycle plastic food containers. Possibly you could build a rack and use suitable bins made from something

Hi Brendan,
I have a 6 (think 6) draw tool chest and made a very heavy duty trolley for it to live on. The trolley has enough room for the tool chest and some extra space for parts and my Record vice lives on it too. Under where the tool chest and table are a couple of spots to fit some large bins. The bins can slide in and out. The whole thing is on 400Kg rated casters.
I use it when I'm working on my car or other related stuff. I don't work on my car all that often now since I got the 4x4 set up the way I like it....
Cheers,
Simon

I also have a stack of the plastic boxes as posted by Blu_Rock. I used to get mine at Bunnings until they stopped selling the Australian made Fischer brand and started selling a Chinese knock off - at the same price.
If you're looking for a larger tool chest then I'd go for the Maxim toolboxes. I have a set of these and they are excellent value for money.Geoff

Hi Brendan,
Are these the sort of draws you mean?

No ideas where to get them sorry.

How about these drawers from king chrome.
at 150 bills from one of the on line tool crowds.
The kids at school are browned off with toolboxes, so I will give em a change. I reckon a 8 draw model based on the one below
should be in their capabilities. It will be an ideal project to introduce them to hand tools.

G'Day Brendan,
Here's another suggestion.
I have used this company in 4 different places were I used to work over 30plus years.
Good quality, great range but may be more than you want.
Cheers, crowie

Stu's link shows an Australian made Rota drawer unit. Here's something similar on Ebay Vintage Industrial Metal Drawers Storage | eBay
I haven't seen Rota stuff around for a long time but the drawer unit is the sort thing you'd find at a swap meet or garage sale. I use Fischer boxes along with US made Plano tackle boxes for holding stuff like fixings and milling cutters. Helps that they are transparent.

Following on from Morrisman - check out second hand office equipement dealers, there are still a lot of old file card cabinets out there, with drawers from 3"x5" (75 high x130 wide) up to about 5" x 10", all about 18"-24" deep.
If you are really lucky, you will find some really old 1930-1940's stuff that still has another century or life left.
