Thread: todays tools gloat

We have one of those at work (same thing, different badge) and it's great. The one thing that really bugs me though is there's nowhere on the quill casting to stuck a mag base indicator holder to clock up a vice; you gotta go to the bottom of the ram for a big enough flat area.

Would something along these lines work? Just what I had, you reminded me I keep looking at that spot thinking it'd be good for that, and have never actually tried it. You could always take a cheap Noga knockoff arm off the base, and it'd be a trivial matter to make a little adaptor to mount it in that spot. Depending on what you're doing, might even be able to leave it there all the time, just fold it out of the way...

Not much fun moving machine through a normal doorway
disassemble then reassemble take lots of time
The motor didn't have the tails bought out so needs some surgery, have found the tails just need to wire them to the outside world.
Buggered today, again tomorrow.

Yeah moving machines is fun, not.
Is that a new mill? That would make moving a machine a different senario.
Your work/hobby space is looking great.

I had to dig some wires out of a single phase motor windings several months back to reverse it, I supprised myself and got it all working with the help of Google.
Where was Google 30-35 years ago to help out, lol.

Yes it is new but a bit scratched up from the engine crane
Motors are quite simple really, especially 3 phase ones.

I think I'm up to around the 25 NT30 collet chucks in varying Er sizes, then boring heads and boring bars, face mills, MT adaptors and a few spare arbours for roundtoit projects.
But often still never have the end mill or slotting cutter I need for a job loaded, lol

It's expensive but over the years you accumulate it, and the cost is long forgotten.

We all have to start somewhere, 30 years ago I would never have dreamed I'd have the machines and tooling I have.
It gets addictive to have all the tooling you need or want,lol

25 seems insane. Do u keep tools mounted in them? Are u CNC?
I got ER40 for the mill and a D4 chuck for the lathe which i always wanted.
I have ER20 collets on the the CNC router table so may get a chuck for them on the mill for jobs that need the smaller nut for clearance.

Yeah mounted tools on most of them, some edge finders etc, they add up. It's not CNC but I bought the ballscrews to CNC my mill some years ago for around $750, but have been warned off it for 1 off jobs with programing.

With having tools loaded it saves so much time grabbing a loaded collet chuck, give the taper a wipe and it's ready to go, they add up really quickly.

I'd like to CNC it, but have power feeds on all 3 axis and just about to do the Quill, so no real need other than production jobs which I don't get.

I'm a bit overboard on my lathe as well, I had 5 factory tool holders, then made another 46, so lathe tools are loaded as well for the same reason.

For my time and my few customers time I think spending time changing tools saves me time and money doing a job.
Just wish the shaper was the same,lol

Most of the time I go for "functional", now and again I like to "turn it on" just to see what I can do. Finding the time is the problem. Even bluing it would be a start!

That's the trouble with me, I have to make every project not only function, but look good. Maybe OCD or something.

I made a quill clamp many years ago with a square bar vertically and stops either side for my quill glass scale, I also incorporated 2x threads to accept my mag base arms.

Has worked flawlessly over the years.

I wasn't going to say anything, but there IS a disgusting lack of scraping visible on it....
