Something weird happened tonight. I attended a friend of a friend's 60th birthday and came home with a free machinists level.

I was sitting in the backyard enjoying small talk when i noticed what appeared to be a precision machinists level of some sorts sitting in the garden as an "ornament"

I told him what it was and what it did and he picked it up and gave it to me.

It was funny because he had no idea what it did. The rotating sleeve was turned over to protect the vial, hiding any hint of what it was.

When he picked it up, water drained out of it!

All looks intact except the small vial at one end which is damaged.

    It's a 12" J rabone & sons.

I'll give it a clean and compare it to my starrett 98 to see what sensitivity it is.

Probably around 1 thou per 12"

    Simon.
Lucky you. Sad to see something like that in that condition but at least it appears to be salvageable.
    Good one.

A strip down and into the citric acid bath for a couple of days ! Don't get acid on the brass parts though.

Simon, you're supposed to GIVE the present, not receive one, unless it's your birthday!!!
You're a very lucky man, hopefully it'll be fully restored to its former glory?

    Finally found one:

Pedestal model, table looks good, runs well... while I have rather enjoyed the Workmax I'm quite keen to waddle it out of it's home in the workshop and waddle this one into it's place.

I don't suppose this was a garden ornament in its previous life.

While some of the drill presses I currently have waiting for resto (school starts soon, it'll be on for young and old then) certainly look like they spent their life in the garden, this one actually seems pretty well oiled and kept. Makes for a nice chance haha.

I'll be getting some more later in the week. Before I spend any more time cleaning up the shed and making a path to swap the drills over I am trying to find a local sparkie who will replace the power switch with a more modern safety one, since this drill ought to meet my needs indefinitely.

    Hi Ray,

Nice score ! Pity about the chipped end on that 3/4" UNF tap. Chop the end off with an abrasive disc and grind it flat. It should make it usable. The callipers are nice as well. Complete with pouch, lucky you.

I think that might just be a fold of paper towel covering the end...
