Default Replacement blade for 4 x 6 bandsaw.

I suppose it was inevitable but I didn't think that it would happen so soon. The blade on my recently acquired saw let go at the weld after 4 cuts through 2 1/4" 1214 round bar.

    What is the recommended replacement?

In defence of the saw, it does a neat job albeit slowly and is by far, less stressful than using a parting off tool. It has the huge advantage of being able to hold a 2 foot long, heavy piece of bar easily. Bit trickier holding that in the lathe and cutting a thin slice off the end.

A Bi-Metal blade would be a better substitute than the original if you are intending to cut a lot of solid bar at 25mm plus.
If cutting 25mm minus and pipe or rhs or shs you may want to look at a carbon steel blade with a higher tooth count than the Bi-Metal.

I use a bi-metal blade from the local saw sharpening place, have been using it for alot of cutting over the last year or so. Bit dearer, well OK about $30, but well worth the money and it cuts much faster than the standard blades.

Having said that, any blade should not fail at the weld, especially after so few cuts, so IO would be taking it back and asking for a replacement.

    Hi BT,
I know Dave J swears by the Starret(?) blades he buys 10 at a time from H & F. I think they work out at about $10 a piece if you buy 10 at a time.
I'm still on the first blade in my blade, so for what its worth, like Big Shed I use a bimetal from the local saw sharpening place, $33 for my blades(next size up I think, made in Germany so they must be good lol). So far its worked great.

There is some info in Machinery's Handbook on running bandsaw blades in but I don't know how much difference it makes on saws our size.
So in short, anything is better than the blade they come with. I've heard many people say they are just rubbish. In fact one guy said "don't even use it, buy a new one when you buy your saw and be done with it".(can't find the link sorry)
Do you have coolant on it yet?

Thanks for the replies Peter, Fred and Stuart,

I rang H and F but all their sales staff were too busy to help so I rang Fiora Machinery who sold me the saw. I can by a carbon steel blade for about 12 bucks and a bimetal bade for about 34. Both German. Just a matter of TPI. The original bade worked ok on the bar I was cutting. I can't see myself cutting much tube so maybe the same tpi.

Stuart, the coolant system is a sophisticated paint brush and a tuna can full of mixed soluable oil. Needs improvement.

If you are getting the Bi-Metal it will probably be a 10/14,if you head towards the Carbon Steel maybe an 18,are they making these up or off the shelf.

    Sounded off the shelf Peter.

Given that H and F are about a kilometer away from home, I will drop in there on Friday and see what the have to offer as far as Starrett blades go. I did not see a bimetal blade in their online catalogue for the 4 x 6. If they don't have one I'll buy the German version from Fiora.

H & F have a pretty limited selection of starret blades for their smallest saw, 6, 14 and 18 TPI. They are $11 each, and yeah you can get 1 free if you buy 10. I'm still on my original blade, which actually hasn't been too bad... but bought a pile of spares from H & F. I've asked them before about bimetal - they don't stock them. Cheers - Mick
