Cheap vices at Super Cheap Auto
Hi guys,
Just noticed today today that Super Cheap Auto have got a sale on which includes 50% off their vices. The brand is Gripwell, who I have no idea as to the quality. However, when it's only $50 for a 150mm offset vice I'm not going to complain about how much life I get out of it. I also picked up a small 100mm swivel base vice for $20, which was smaller than I was expecting, but will be handy on the corner of the bench. And once again, that's a price that I'm happy with.
They've also got various clamps and whatnot discounted, which also might interest some.
When I picked up the offset vice, it was one of two in the store, but it's well worth asking if they're getting any more in before the end of the catalogue date, as I enquired about another tool which they had no stock of and they expected it to get in whilst discounted.

Thanks for that,
A mate has been chasing a vice for a few months but didn't want to spend $100 on a Chinese vice. He just wants it as a general purpose vice so that should do him. Will have to see if they have one in around here.

You are a champion. I just bought the offset vice 4 F clamps and a 225 mm wood vice ($20) from Taringa...

If they're out of stock, I'd suggest buying from their online store, as a single vice only appears to cost $10 for shipping, and an extra $5 for every extra. Quite impressive considering it weighs ~18kg
I'm actually quite tempted to pick up a second one, it'd definitely be handy for the longer projects

Saved me posting to tell everyone about the sale - I bought two huge corner clamps and about 12 f-types!

I got one too. Haven't had a good look to assess quality, but boy is it heavy!

Mine is out of the box & on the end of my heavy bench with the holes drilled but I don't have any suitable bolts... I thought I did.

Me too!
But my brand new swivel vice is in bits, with the base currently bolted to the mill in order to get it flat(ish).
There were huge lumps on the base of the casting, so now way would it sit flat.
I could have taken it back and swapped for another one, but then I would have missed out on an excuse to make mess
Cheers,
Andrew

Just a heads up the 600X120 F clamps are listed as best buy. If you look on the website there is a pic of blue ones with rubber handles. These are what was in store and I got them for $7.50 each. They appear really good robust clamps, I'd have paid $30 each for them. I'm also happy with the 120X400's I bought 8 of. The little 150's are a bit flimsy but the next size up at only 50c more are quite fine for general work.
I took the wood vice back. It was probably usable but I have a plan for a workbench based on one in woodsmith some time back and it requires a tail vice screw. I couldn't adapt the bench vice.
Really good sale. I don't even bother checking the supercheap catalogs anymore as their stuff is often not great quality and the prices higher than elsewhere, but this sale is a big exception...
Taringa had some offset vices left yesterday.I'm just a startled bunny in the headlights of life. L.J. Young.

For the prices even the cheapness of the F-clamps isn't bad, and they seem to have some holding power. I bought a couple of those huge corner/mitre clamps too, after a little bit of frustration with the threads not turning I waxed them and it's all good now.

Gday Andrew, i wasn't really game to crack the packet open and cop a feel of those corner clamps, but what are they made of? I could have sworn they were big and plastic while i was holding em, so I wasn't game enough to buy..
thanks

Went down to Super Cheap in Thebarton (SA) this morning. They had a few bench clamps left but were basically out of any F or G. Some Bunnings have fairly good F clamps with orange handles fairly cheap, from memory they were around the $5 mark. They seem to come and go so if I see them I tend to grab a few and they work as expected.
Did manage to pick up some hammer finish paint at 20% off so it was worth the trip ..... lucky I didn't buy it last weekend. If you don't talk to your cat about catnip ...... who will?

Looks it, doesn't it? I just dropped one on the cement and it's intact except for a scratch in one corner - not sure if it's steel or aluminium showing through but it's not plastic...
Hang on and I'll run downstairs and test with a magnet
Ok, magnet doesn't grip. Aluminium? and not a bad build quality when you look closely.
