Lathe Cross Slide Hole Driller.
Here's another simple project i made to drill set screw holes on a shaft without removing it from my lathe and going to the drillpress. Sometimes its easier to drill in the lathe that way i don't have to have another setup when going back to the lathe if the part was removed to drill in a drill press. Plus i can drill holes on an angle or combined with my degree wheel on the spindle i can do patterns like drilling my faceplate. The driller is just a block of steel fitted to my lathe compound and a hand drill driving a shaft with a chuck. Everything is on the lathes centerline. Enjoy...Bob

Bob
Thanks for posting that, great idea and so simple. I'm sure lots of blokes here will find it useful.
Oh and welcome to Aus. You might find the Aussie sense of humour a little different to what you are used to but we are generally an easy going bunch. You might find we use names for things that have an entirely different meaning in the US. (ie thongs) If so don't hesitate to ask for clarification.

Bob how did you layout those holes for the dividing plate?
I made a very similar device a couple of weeks ago to take a small dremel style tool, except mine slots into an AXA QCTP. Handy little thing isn't it!

Well it looks like a backplate to me that has dividing holes in it so I guessed that's what it was going to be used for.

I think he is drilling his face plate. As best I can tell the two outside circles of holes have the same number holes. If they were one hole different they would be half a pitch out by halfway around.
I guess we will find out when Bob wakes up

The big plate is a faceplate for my lathe. Since i couldn't cut slots i just drilled bolt holes. The white is just a primer to scribe some layout lines. Here is my degree wheel mounted on the other end of the spindle...Bob

Great set up and so much can be done using that, expanding the idea even further.

Bob,
I made a drill spindle something like yours. I added a piece of rubber hose between the drill and the spindle as I didnt like the idea of the drill hanging off the end. Seems I was worrying about nothing as your's works just fine.
I had planned on doing something like that on my lathe for dividing, but I went the cheaper way of buying a mill and DRO and rotary table..... oh wait!
Do you have a way to lock the lathe spindle?

Hi Bob, came out great.
I have a couple of degree wheels about 400mm round, off a exhaust bender if I can find them. I am thinking of making a mount off the rear of the spindle for the odd job.

12 ga barrel i think Remington. I drill them for my dad who uses them on his shotguns for turkey shoots (card shooters) They convert pump action shotgun barrels to semi auto use. They are easier to find and just need a hole or two drilled in them for auto use. Good eye..Bob
