Noga Indicator Base
I led myself to temptation yesterday when I ventured halfway across Perth to Jack's Tools in Gosnells. Jack's would be the last remaining seller of second hand tools over here ( excluding the profusion of pawn shops). I walked in and my eyes where drawn to the Noga sitting high on a shelf. Naturally enough, I bought it. These things are superb. The indicator holding clamp accommodates 8mm, and 3/8" shafts and DTI dovetails. It is also fitted with an invaluable fine adjuster. I know a few other forum members own these bases and have extolled their virtues previously. A nice product from Israel and well worth having.

AB,
Your missus is a lucky women, being showered with precious gifts, every time you splurge out.
Unless of course, she stands beside you at the lathe, while you are tending to the mill.
How else do you get away with it?
Nice pick-up.

She only knows about the Ebay purchases because there's a trail. She spent 70 bucks yesterday on a haircut. I spent 95 on the Noga. Close to even.
Did I ever mention that I snuck home with my second Hercus 9 without her ever knowing? Managed to get it around the backyard by myself. She helped me move the third Hercus, the ARL. She approved that purchase.

That's a nice looking base, Bob. I bought two etalon rigs a couple of years ago from a swiss ebayer. They had vacuum bases instead of the standard mag base. I still have the vac bases, but screwed the good bits onto el-cheapo Chinese mag bases.
(What is the equivalent of "el-cheapo"?)

Two for the price of one....
J3dprints,
i have had my eye on one of these for a while.
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Noga-NF1...MAAOSwUchZ-NP1
My plan is to get this one so I can use it in the mill spindle to centre work. I will also convert a spare mag base with a 3/8 adaptor with a snug so I can quickly swap the arm to convert it for use as a mag base indicator.
Cheers
Piers

Save 80 bucks to spend on something else and buy one of these - https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AU-Indic...QAAOSwHNxaQhg6
I know it's garish with its trick red anodising but it works. I have one.

Bob,
Nice find on the Noga, I agree with your advice to Piers, the Chinese nock offs with a little bit of work modified do work quite well. I had a couple of them and after pulling them apart and polishing/ de burring the work faces and adding a thrust bearing they now work nicely.Mine did not have the fine adjust mechanism so I made up a pair of them and also a mill clamp fitting for my mill.

Beautifully executed work as usual Bob.
The Noga's fine adjuster is something I'm not enamoured with. It could just be the one fitted to my stand but the spring tension (or lack of it) allows a dial indicator to move when I don't want it to move. The stand's gymnastic ability is fantastic and when used with a featherweight DTI, it's my stand of choice but for trustworthy support of a dial indicator I more often than not use a less agile but more rigid Eclipse.
Bob.

Hi Bob,
When I looked at adding the fine adjuster I went with the one closest to the indicator, I thought the base type adjuster would have too much leverage working against it and run into the problem you have found. I have noticed that quite a few users do like the base style though. I did have a few different strength springs available and ended up with a fairly stiff one, this holds the indicator firmly but can move it when adjusting you have to hold onto the arm as you adjust ie a two handed operation. The base adjuster could be better in this regard.

I am still amazed how SWMBO can spend 80 on hair, I wish that was my lovely wife. I stopped questioning hair and female clothes 1 year in marriage. how can they spend soooo much. No. It was on special!
