Lathe balance problem fixed (almost)
I have a 9" Sheraton which had a bad balance problem. To try and locate same, I then isolated drive from jackshaft to headstock and switched motor on and determined problem to be in jackshaft and pulleys. I then took large pulley off jackshaft and put it on a short, tight fitting axle, with both ends of this axle supported on level, smooth bearers and with pulley allowed to hang in a deep channel. The heavy side imeadiately swing to bottom. This pulley was way out of balance. To rectify this I started drilling holes in the heavy side of pulley and kept drilling until it showed no tendency to roll at all. You can see the final result in photo. Some 20 holes, 9mm diam, between 6.7mm and 8.2mm deep. Although it hasn't completely cured problem it has made a hell of a difference.
Incidentally pin that held pulley to jackshaft is tapered (you have to try and work out which way taper is and drive out the right way)

Sounds like you got it fixed. It's a wonder it made it this far along it's life without someone doing something about it before hand.

Well done on finding the problem and finding a solution. I wonder how many of us have similar problems but have not investigated them. I know my AL-335 is not perfect and I can feel a slow vibration when its running.
Fenner belts fixed most of it, but I can still feel something....
