Other Forums
I've drawn inspiration from this Forum, and the Hercus section, for more than 4 years.
There are occasions however, when I'll have a look at other Forums, for additional, and /or, a different perspective on issues.
The Practical Machinist, Southbend section has a lot of info also applicable to Hercus lathes, for example.
What other Forums do you fellas reckon are worthy of a mention?

There was some disagreement with the mods here a while ago about giving links to other forums. From what I remember it was only allowed if it was to do with the topic being discussed in a thread.
I am a member of these forums

I hope there isn't a conflict of interest here. Before posting, I did some homework and sort the opinion of one of our most reverent moderators. All was well and even received some other Forums I'd never heard of.

I have found the metalillness forum to be a great resource and the name is just so appropriate.
Just google metalillness and it'll be the top link.
Cheers,
Greg.

I don't know how you blokes find time to fit all this in. This forum, the occassional look in the woodie forum, PM's Euro machine section and an infrequent glimpse in the Yahoo Schaublin user group and I'm tuckered out.
I agree with Patrick, there are some prickly characters over in PM, Don "Milacron" Thomas would have to have to have the sharpest thorns. The Yanks certainly don't hold back.

Agree, PM is a great resource, but I stopped reading it after it appeared to me to come across as a pi$$ing contest too often. eg it doesn't matter what you did with your machine, if it was Asian, and especially Chinese, you weren't even allowed to mention it. Have some clapped out POS with an operator who couldn't hold a dimension to save his life and you're welcomed with open arms. All very bizarre. On the one hand I can understand, the owner doesn't want "hobby" machines discussed, but as we all know the lines are becoming increasingly blurred. I was personally less than impressed when I was seriously considering dropping $1K on a new drill grinder and was told that, since it was built in Taiwan, it was therefore a "hobby machine", hence had no place in being discussed there and the thread was rather rudely terminated
For those of us with Hercus lathes however, the South Bend forum is excellent.
HSM CAN be a good BB, but it seems to vary. While there was a recent hiatus, as I believe a few people were put in the penalty box to cool their heels for a while, it seems there are a lot of OT posts about things completely unrelated to machining. Sadly there are a number of people there who, regardless of the topic, will wade in and pretend to be experts on the subject which is a shame. Look for names with 10, 20, or in one case over 30 THOUSAND posts to their names and draw your own conclusions. If you still can't figure it out, look for my name shortly afterward, as some here know I don't have a lot of patience with pretenders and rarely miss an opportunity to stir the potOver all though there is a lot of good advice there and it's a very active BB so if you have a question it's normally answered very quickly.

Hi All,
I used to get involved in email mailing lists before forums came along, and a bit on dial-up bbs systems before that, and it's very similar to meeting people in real life, you get all types. After a while you get to see the funny side, some have a tendancy to take things way too seriously.
There's that old joke about "how many forum posts does it take to change a light globe"
1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs
1 to move it to the Lighting section
2 to argue then move it to the Electricals section
7 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs
5 to flame the spell checkers
3 to correct spelling/grammar flames
6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb" ... another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid
2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"
15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct
19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a lightbulb forum
11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum
36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty
7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs
4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's
3 to post about links they found from the URL's that are relevant to this group which makes light bulbs relevant to this group
13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too"
5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy
4 to say "didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"
13 to say "do a Google search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs"
1 forum lurker to respond to the original post 6 months from now and start it all over again.
I prefer hanging out on forums to watching TV.. although, I can't match Dave's impressive depth of involvement.
Regards
Ray
PS, I should add that this forum is, I think, the best one around, people here are very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful with a touch of humor, and lightly moderated at just the right level.

Love it Ray ! I was tempted to quote your post but had to hold myself back.
I also find a bit of inspiration from the 4WD forums - bar fabrication, camper trailer build ups etc. Australian 4WD Action | Forum - Index page, NewHilux.net • Index page.
Cheers

Patrick, Ray,
This forum is my main forum.
I only visit 4-5 of them daily to see if there are any interesting posts, (I don't read them all) the others I visit weekly or monthly. The main reason I joined them was to see the pictures in the post, as you have to be a member to see them on some sites.
Ray, I have seen that joke around somewhere and it might be funny, but a lot of the times it's true.
Dave.
