    Default hafco al 336

    Hi Fellas I have a al 336 I believe I have over travelled the cross slide
    now when I wind the cross slide by hand it has tight spots any advice or do I just ring Hare and Forbes thanks Peter

    Well that's certainly better than what I did!

    First thing I would try is loosening the bolt that holds the cross slide nut. (if its the same as the ones I have seen its the unbrako in about the middle on the top of the cross slide. Just a little, see if that helps.

    If thats not it I'd guess that the gib has moved.

    I Loosened the bolt but it is still the same I can see the brass nut rock as I move the cross slide so what did you ?if its not a rude question

    Did the Cross Slide Screw come out of the Cross Slide nut.

    If it did what procedure did you use to get it back on.

    Just curious but how did you manage to Feed it too far?.

    What makes you think you Fed it to far.

    Hi Pipeclay I just removed the bolt to the last few threads but did not fully remove it
    I think not enough attention caused the problem

    Did the Cross Slide become loose at all that you were aware of.

    I hope it didn't have a DRO scale on it.
    This would be a good time to take the cross side completely off, clean and check things over.
    Start by removing the compound by undoing the 2 bolts holding it onto the cross slide and put it aside somewhere safe.
    Next undo the gib screw at the front right of the cross slide, after it is out wind the cross slide 50mm towards the back side of the lathe and remove the gib strait out.
    Lastly wind the cross slide towards the back until the screw and nut disengages and take off the cross slide towards the back.

    After doing this check the nut on the cross slide for any damage, it can be taken off the cross slide with an allen key like Stuart said.
    I have wound my cross slide of many times and never had a problem getting it back on, so I don't think you would have done any damage.

    There is the possability that if it did travel further than what was recommended,that the Cross Slide could of become slighltly loose allowing the Gib to also become a little loose allowing a little amount of Swarf to come between the Gib and Cross Slide causeing your tightness,allternatively if the Cross Slide Screw almost worked its way out of the nut any build up of Swarf on the part of the Screw on the Rear side of the nut would now of either been pushed off the Screw by the nut or has worked its way into the Threads of the nut causeing some tightness.

    It would be a good idea to remove the Cross Slide and Clean the Gib,Screw and Nut just to be on the safe side.

    Hopefully the DRO is still functioning properly and you havent damaged the Scale.

    You would have to remove the Reader Head before removing the Cross Slide.

    Take note of the position of the Reader Head before removal and also note the position of any shims that may be used in the instilation of the Reader Head.

    DRO seems to be fine so is there anything to stop the cross slide from unwinding off the nut or is it just like a hercus that will wind off and continue to slide
