That's why I welded in M12 stainless acorn nuts in various places on my boat hull. If I ever manage to score a 30 cal BMG I'll have nice solid mount points for it. Until then they'll serve for fuel cans, SCUBA cylinders and the like.
On the ferry on Thursday, Melbourne on Friday then off to Gippsland to go sailing.

Re Ropetangler
I am not sure why they do add the rails but on other models of the same vehicle they don't . I guess it's because of no gutter edge like on old vehicles . The rails throw the weight to the front and back nothing supporting in the middle .
I don't want to interfere with the standard factory fittings so I am just adding to the rails and will install a removable centre support on each rail That sits down into the edges of the roof joint . The roof on a Nissan is very strong and if you watch that ice road towing show they pull up a Nissan that has rolled down about a 200 meters sheer drop and is a total wreck but the two occupants survived because the roof did not cave in. It only has to hold two spare tyres , two jerry cans and some recovery gear in a box . I will keep the load to 90 kilo max .The volume of a pizza of thickness 'a' and radius 'z' is given by pi z z a.

Am I imagining things or have a huge number of posts turned to vapour? Forum problem?

Yes, this thread was reported to the mods for having gone way off the rails with about 13 off topic posts.
As a reminder the topic of this thread is "Your latest project"
After discussion amongst the mods it was decided that the posts relating to Retromilling's health problem would be moved to a separate thread in the Off Topic forum, where they belong not here.
//metalworkforums.com/showthrea...0659&p=1922175
Some of the other off topic posts have gone to off topic heaven.
Please keep this thread on topic or more posts will go the same way.

Well nothing to do with machining, took some photos of what I did today.
Replacing a not very old concrete tank that was apparently shoddily built. Only got about thirty years out of it. Have a plastic tank to put there.
The top bit was smashed in a line with a sledge hammer as the walls were only about 40mm thick, then a chain wrapped around it and it was pulled away.
The base was a bit trickier as I did not have any equipment on site that would easily shift it. So I punched a hole through the floor, lifted it with the crane and like the ancient Egyptians put some logs under it, let it down and pulled it away, until it broke in half.

Horizontal screw press tooling
I want to recess some bolts into sheet metal, such that when I run a small bead of weld around I can flush them off on the non-thread side while on the thread side it will not easily pull through.
I'd seen this sort of tooling on project Binky and wondered whether I would be able to get it working on such a small scale. They use a hydraulic press but I was hoping for something this small to get away with the Horizontal Screw Press (aka the 5" Dawn vice)

The pin in the centre is a 3mm dowel pin that has been sitting in the shed waiting for a task for the last 25 years... It's job is just to line up the two halves through a 1/8" hole in the sheet metal. I only have a couple of these to do so the tooling is just some bright steel bar, 12mm diameter. The spigot is 7.6mm in diameter, allowing me to turn down the head of a M5 hex head bolt to round (and thin it down to around 1.2mm) for fitment.
Much to my surprise it worked first time without the need to modify anything. Even putting it up near a sheet edge did not produce large amounts of distortion.

The dimples will be drilled to size (5mm) but I thought if I left the centre hole small it would not tear as easily.
Next trick is to make up some studs and see how the sheet is affected by the heat - I'm hoping that most of it will stay in the head of the stud and leave the sheet without too much ripple.

I have done this a few times using suitably countersunk block of steel underneath, clearance holes and just one of the countersunk bolts I need it to take. The hole stretches a bit, but not enough to be a problem.

Tank in place. Only thing that has gone wrong is the colour of the tank. Not my sort of colour it is too bland.

That Hiab must have just about paid for its self by now?
Do you have a wind mill to service that. Tell me you were leaning into the wind or some thing, that tank doesn't look level.
I can send you up some Graffiti Vandals / Urban Artist's. They will have that looking like a New York subway in the 10 minutes past 2.00 am.
Regards Phil.
