Thanks for the likes - I'm surprised there would be any interest.

I did collect some temperature/time data while I was doing this but only just got around to plotting it up and thought I would post it given it really does show the effect of a good heat sink.

Top (green) line shows motor by itself - eventuality after about another hour or so it gets to over 60ºC

The orange line and blue lines are paired - the blue line is for the raw heat sink (unpainted and no heat transfer paste) and orange line is for the motor with the raw heatsink attached. Motor temp has dropped by ~8º and heat sink temp goes up by about the same amount. Makes sense given they have about the same mass.

The red and black lines are paired - red is for heat sink now painted matt black and with heat thermally conductive paste, black is for accompanying motor temp. Notice how much closer the heat sink and motor temperatures have become and temp dropped to around ~40ºC

    Default MT Taper Cleaners

I copied these from a design I saw on YouTube. MT2 & MT4 for the Hercus 260. I even made the dowel for the MT4 on the Hercus. A length of 32mm dowel is expensive. I was surprised at the amount of crap that came out of each taper, especially the tailstock. I suppose I shouldn't have been, given that I've never cleaned it.

    Hi Chris, Guys,

Nice ! As for dowelling, a length of timber curtain pole is much cheaper than a piece of the same size dowel over here and you can get sizes upto 40 or 42 mm diameter.

I saw some junked nylon rollers about 8 inches long, in the scrap yard the other day which would have been Ideal for making these cleaners. I didn't pick any up, but I will have a look later !

On the Myford with its MT2 spindle taper, I use a 12 bore shotgun pull through, the one that is a spiral brass brush. That one works well.

I have had a few plastic 30 taper ones for many years, but never seen them for MT.

Great idea though, you can always turn a square piece of timber round on your lathe, which would be so much cheaper and maybe free if you have suitable timber laying around.

    Sorry I missed that, lol
30 years ago I used to make wooden toys, dowel was still expensive but not like it is today. I suppose demand is down these days etc

    Default Clap Trap

I borrowed heavily from a commercial design. Mine is made from 8mm solid round 304 SS and the commercial is powdercoated MS. Mine cost a quarter of the commercial version. It uses a car door central locking actuator to pull the release pin. These can be bought on eBay in a kit of four with a receiver and two key fob remotes for about $25 delivered. The range of the TX/RX is excellent. There's a link to a video of it in action at the bottom.

    Hi Chris, Guys,

I like that device ! Could do with something similar to nobble these ruddy pigeons
    Messy preparation but quite tasty.

Just an update, I called into the scrapyard this morning whilst the wife was in town shopping and grabbed one of those plastic rollers I mentioned earlier.

7" inches long and 1.5" inches diameter with a hole right through and threaded 3/8" at each end. No scrap value so the scrap man gave it to me. I couldn't reach any of the others in the rubbish skip.

    Hi Chris,

No plan at all really ! It was that your post triggered remembering that I had seen something that could easily be pressed into making a cleaning device like the ones you made and the fact that the mill spindle bore is MT3. I use the pull through to clean the lathe spindle bore.

One of the difficulties in cleaning the mill one is that the drawbar is captive and needs to be removed to pull a cloth wipe through it.

I must admit that I try not to leave is open, but to have something in there all the time. On the times that I have given it a clean, I'm surprised by the amount of muck that gets into it. I'm sure that it migrates down and through the wedge hole on to the top of the arbour. The drawbar is always filthy when I do remove it.

    Default sausage filler nozzle

The crappy plastic nozzle that came with my Kenwood sausage maker broke, so I tried to find a SS replacement. Unfortunately Kenwood don't sell a SS version and "standard" number size nozzles won't fit. So I made one. I got a 300mm length of 62.5mm round 420 SS for $30 from Ian Stansfield-Smith. George Archer wanted $50 for a 30mm long slice of 304! I also got some 22.2mm 304 tube off eBay. It's polished inside and out. I turned the 420 to fit the machine and silver soldered the pipe in. Cleaned it all up on the lathe.

My latest project is scraping the Cross slide on my Hafco 960 lathe. I have done the slide and now will use it to spot the carriage.
